question for STM's

I plan to breastfeed and then pump but just in case I was looking into formulas and trying to figure out which is best...I know every baby is different and they all like different things but my question is which did you go with Infamil or Similac? I've received both from both companies and don't know which to use. My husband says Infamil is better because they go in stages but I think we should try both and see what SHE will like best. Also, I'm sure speaking to a pediatrician would help but they have preferences as well. All suggestions are welcome! Smile

Re: question for STM's

  • Up & Up brand from Target.  Way cheaper and pedi said that while it's not completely identical to enfamil/similac, its definately a great option if it worked for DS.  We went with sensitive stomach (pink can I think).

  • Our hospital offered Similac Advanced. It worked well with DS and we still use it.

  • DS1 had reflux and we ended up on Similac sensitive. It was expensive, and Similac sends tons of coupons at the beginning, but then totally stops.

  • Target UP and UP. Its the same exact thing but so much cheaper!

  • I breastfed DD for 6 months and then had to switch to formula because my supply completely dried up.  We first tried Enfamil (yellow can) and it made her very gassy.  Then we switched to Good Start Natural Cultures (it was in a green can at the time, though I think they have since revamped their packaging), and she did so much better!  None of the gas issues as with Enfamil and not as much spitting up.  I think it is a little trial and error to see what works for each baby.

  • Just my opinion, but if you really want to make BFing work, I would not even worry about formula right now. Some moms feel better having it in the house "just in case" and others don't want it around b/c it's too easy to reach for formula when your LO is fussy/hungry at 2 a.m. and you just want to sleep.

You can always wait and see IF you do need formula what kind you'd like to try. Every baby is different and you never know what kind might work best. When we did switch to formula at 9 months, we went with Target brand (up and up) b/c he was only on it for 3-4 months before switching to WCM.

I get what you're saying, but I only get to stay home for about 2 months on maternity. We're renovating at my job and space is very limited as to where I'll be able to pump once I get back. I'll definitely wait and see how BFing goes but I just wanted an opinion. Thanks ladies :)

  • I would definitely try out the different samples you got and see. I weaned DD really gradually over about 4 months and tried a few different kinds that we had received as samples. We started one bottle of formula/day at 7 months and she did best with Similac Sensitive, so that's what we stuck with.

  • I exclusively breastfed until 9mo, at that point we began supplementing with formula because my supply was dropping and she didn't seem to be getting enough from me.  We used Earth's Best Organic...it's more expensive but I liked that it was organic.

  • We used Enfamil to supplement after BFing for 6 months.  DD loved it and grew well with it.

  • There's a federal law that requires employers to provide a locked area to support breast feeding/pumping. Google it!
