heater setting?

At what temperature is your thermostat set for overnight? It's been in the 40s here. We got our first energy bill, and it was a bit high (though not crazy).

I HATE HATE HATE being cold, so I had it set at 70 for the night - mostly because I'm afraid of DS getting cold, and I KNOW he doesn't sleep as well when he's cold. I put a blanket over him before I go to bed, but it doesn't stay.

I've since adjusted the thermostat and started layering his pjs, but I just have no clue.

Re: heater setting?

  • It's usually set around 68 and it has been in the 30s here. Sometimes it's set to 70 on really old days

  • It has been in the teens to twenties here at night. Ours is set at 70 all the time. But, we have a small house so our bill isn't that high. Plus, my boys don't sleep at all if they're cold.

They both wear an undershirt and fleece pj's to bed.

  • 68 at night and last ight he had on a long sleeve shirt, flannel pajamas and a blanket sleeper since he always kicks off his blankets. I used to keep a space heater in there that auto-shut off but I worry too much about a fire.

I always start sweating when I read temperature posts on the bump. I would die sleeping at 70, way too hot for us.

Same here! We keep it between 67-68 during the day, although the house is generally a little cooler than that, our windows are really drafty.  At night it's closer to 65-66.

We do have a small space heater in DD's room, because her room is usually 2-3 degrees cooler than the rest of the house, and she gets cold at night.  We layer her in a t-shirt under one-piece fleece sleeper pajamas with feet.

  • DH sets it to 70 for our room and the girls' room as well. DD2 is always kicking her covers, so I leave it, but I do turn ours down to 68 before we go to bed. I would be perfectly happy with 66, but DH finds it too cold, so 68 is our compromise.

I had thought about a space heater, but there was just a could-have-been-heartbreaking story on the news about a fire caused by a space heater. It was in the kids room - a little girl and her toddler sister. The little girl woke up from the sound of the windows cracking, and woke her parents with her screams. They got the toddler out just in time.

    So....no space heaters for us.

Thanks for all of the feedback - I have it down to 70 (day) and 67 (night), so we'll see how that goes.

  • We have two zones in our house (basement and main level) with in-floor heat. The kids' rooms are downstairs and ours is upstairs, although right now the baby is still in our room at night. We keep both zones set at 69, but the downstairs stays warmer because the concrete really holds the heat in. At night the upstairs drops to about 66-68, depending on the outside temp. I love in-floor, but it does take a while to adjust with temperature changes. Although to be fair I live in MN and it's below zero most nights this time of year. So, long story short, between 66-68 for baby and 69-71 for toddler.

  • Oh man, I would FREEZE at some of your houses!

Its currently 50 degrees outside, which is COLD in Arizona. I have the temp set at 77, and I am comfortable in sweats and a t-shirt. DD is in sweats and a t shirt as well.

At night we set it at 75, any higher and DH sweats. Any colder and I am freezing. P sleeps in long sleeves and pants, socks, with a blanket.

During the summer we keep the house at 79-80 for the sake of our bill ($300+ in the summer, $90-$120 in the winter). At night we kick it to 75.
