Multiples question

Random question, but does anyone know how the chances of having multiples is determined? Ever since FI found out my maternal grandmother had triplets he's worried that we might conceive multiples. The only info I've found says it's possible, but no numbers.

Re: Multiples question

  • IDK, but two of my first cousins were pg with twins, but lost one early on. I wasn't completely shocked when we found out I was pg with twins.

  • Its passed down on the womans side. So like if it was your moms mom, it would be passed down to you.

I'm of the belief that unless you can handle the surprise of an extra baby you should probably wait. Cause spontaneous multiples happen

Oh we're definitely waiting. We don't plan to TTC until at least April 2014.

  • Fraternal twins are heritable on the mother's side... So if your grandmother released three eggs, she might pass the trait of hyper ovulation on.

    Identicals are not.

As for needing to be ready for multiples to TTC... Eh, there are so many things that can happen, it's hard to say you need to be ready for any scenario.

Now if they run heavily in your family, say every woman pops out at least one set, then you should be ready.

It's passed down DIRECTLY through the woman's side.  So you would hold any chance of having multiples, but not your H.  If your dad's side had multiples, he could have passed the hyperovulation to you

  • I'm asking my cousins to confirm, but neither my mom or aunt, nor any of my cousins have had multiples. But I hear it skips a generation, so it could end up being me, my sister, or maybe my younger cousin though it would be years before we find out :)

Skipping a generation for anything is a myth.

Yup. Sometimes the gene just isn't expressed.
