monoamniotic twins...Intro

I was told yesterday at my 7 week ultrasound that I have monoamniotic twins.  The Dr is sending me to a perionatologist at the end of my first trimester.  He said there is always a chance they might find a membrane but he didnt  think that was the case.  At 4 wks 5 days they found a small gest sac, at 5 wks 6 days they found a gest sac with yolk sac no fetal pole, then at 7 weeks they found two yolk sacs two heartbeats and one gestational sac.  Im not sure what makes them so certain but guessing its how they have followed it??? Any help or advise?

It's common to not find the membrane at that stage.  Many people don't have it found until much later on, end if the 1st trimester until 20something weeks.  I'm sorry you were told that

Membranes for ID twins are notoriously difficult to see until after 1st tri. I wasn't confirmed until 14 weeks.

My membrane was found on the 2nd try at the MFM with their more sophisticated u/s.  8 weeks.  

 Keep looking and try not to panic.

I would seriously question your doc about this. At 10 weeks, my membrane was not visible but was clearly there at 12 weeks. There are women on here who didn't see it until 16 weeks. I may be wrong, but I think you should consider finding a new doctor. mono mono is extremely rare.

Im not going to worry myself about that rght now then...I am already ut of work for a tear and my previous history so Ill just focus one thing at a time...if a membrane is found then what kind are they?

They are still identical, but mono/di.

My OB didn't even have the techs attempt to look for it at my 8 week u/s.  She referred to to a perinatologist for the NT scan and said they would look for it then.  Sorry that your doctor scared you but I would try not to worry about it until you get to see the perinatologist.

I was also told that mine were mo/mo, then we found the membrane very clearly at 12 weeks.  Don't worry just yet - it's really too early to tell.

I'm glad you are seeing a peri - he or she should be better able to find that membrane!

Number of yolk sacs almost always corresponds to number of amniotic sacs. The fact that you have two is a very good sign. As others have said, it is way too early to diagnose you as having monoamniotic twins. We didn't find one of our membranes until 22ish weeks.

My OB practice wouldn't even look for a membrane until 14 wks. 7 weeks is waaay too early to make that call. Hang in there and try not to worry!

Hi! FIRST, congratulations!!

Second, I wish I could remember when they saw my membrane. It was REALLY late though. Maybe 12 weeks? 14? In ID trips or twins it has to do with when the embryo split, I believe. Correct me if I'm wrong. But it was super thin in my girlsbut it was there! Give the dr time. I heard "I'm still not sure. Lets check in two weeks" quite a bit. Lol"

Ok you all are making me feel a little better. I had boy/girl twins but my daughter is expecting identical twins and they told here there is no dividing membrane. I was hoping they were young and would find one later on. The only thing that worries me is she is 11 weeks and they said the 'know' there is no dividing membrane because the twins were interlocking their arms.  =(  They plan to monitor her closely but as a mom you know I am going to worry non stop!
