C-sections

My Positive C-section Birth:)

Hi ladies! I have not posted on The Bump in forever !And My daughter is now 18 months old. But I thought I would share my positive C-section experience with everyone. I know that seeing positive stories made me feel better about it!

I will start by saying that I did not have a birth plan. I was super scared to have a vaginal birth or a C-section. I just stayed in the mind set of, whatever kept baby and mom safest. I found out that my daughter was breech and that I would be having a C-section. And I have to say...it was a wonderful experience!! My doctor and the hospital staff where all fantastic!

We arrived at 6am. My husband got to be with me the whole time, from start to finish. They told us that they wanted dad involved as much as possible! When they gave me my epidural, I got to hug and hold onto my husband the whole time. The epi was much easier then I thought! I felt a quick stinging and then it was in and felt nothing after that! We waited about 20 minuets for it to set in. My husband and the nurses had me laughing and keeping me calm. As soon as I was numb they took us to the operating room. While everything was going on I remember the anesthesiologist stroking my face and talking to me. He gave me a play by play of what was going on. My doctor sang the whole time. The next thing I hear is my daughter crying. My husband told me to look up...and there she was! I was vey tired and responded, "ok" and closed my eyes! We still laugh about that!

They cleaned her up and checked her out. They brought her over very quickly for us to see her, kiss her and hold her. They took photos for us too. While they took her to get her stats and final check they closed me up. At this time they took her to my recovery room and my husband got to go with her. I was away from her for about 30 minuets. But she and my husband where in recovery to greet me. They waited for me to get there before giving her her 1st bath. Then we did skin to skin right after. I did get the shakes from all the meds, bet they wrapped us in warm blankets and that helped. This is when all my emotions came rushing out. I couldn't stop crying! I was so happy and the adrenalin was pumping. I has to wait until I stopped shaking before I could breastfeed. (But I would have been able to do that right away.)

We where in recovery for about 2 hours, then we where brought to our room. My cath was out and I was up walking the halls by 8pm that night. The 1st night was pretty painful, but staying on top of the meds and walking really helped me. I was in the hospital for 4 days. Once we where home I didn't need anymore pain meds and was moving around pretty good. Soar and slow, but overall not to painful.

If I could change one thing it would have been having more help. We wanted to be by ourselves for the first 2 weeks, to bond as a family. But  taking care of me and a new baby was a bit rough for my husband. (He was fantastic, but worn out!) So I would have had family come to town sooner to help. But stay in a hotel, so we could still have our family time:)

I'm sorry that things got long. But I just wanted to share my positive C-section birth story:)

  • This is awesome, thank you for sharing! I am a firm believer in only doing c/s if medically necessary. I had to have one because I was in labor for 13 hours but never got past 7 cm, her heart rate dropped and her head was stuck! I cried because I was so scared for major surgery, but they already had the epi in, and gave me something to calm my nerves. Hubby was with me, my doc talked to me during, and the nurse and I were just chatting and laughing! It was a great experience, and they let me hold her right after they got her out! I remember after he had already cut in me I yelled "WAIT! I can feel my feet I think!" And they laughed because he was already opening me up and I had no idea!

  • Thank you so much for the positive birth experience of a c-section.  It really helped me a lot!  My baby is breech as well (has been since 34 weeks - or before!) and I have a scheduled section on March 6th.  If I go into labor before that, they will check the position of the baby and go from there.  I am hoping that the baby turns, but I think that I am finally okay with thinking that I may have to have surgery.  I hope that you know how much it helps to hear such an amazing birth story.  You hear so many horror stories or people that are so negative about the experience.  It is just what I needed.  All I want is a healthy baby, no matter how my labor experience is.  You go into pregnancy thinking one way about labor but it could be completely different (and still wonderful).  Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!

  • Always great to hear positive stories!

I also had to have a c-section this fall, and it could not have gone better.  I was worried about being awake during surgery, but in the moment, something so much bigger was happening that the rest just faded away.  It was the most amazing moment when my daughter arrived, and we were able to be together so quickly that I barely even remember that little bit of time we were separated while they were closing me up.  I think the fact that we were prepared going in allowed us to keep a positive perspective and really take it in as a birth rather than just an operation.
