Language Development

Sooo I'm wondering how many "words" should a 13-14m old have? I'm curious. Is there somewhere/website to findout where they should be around language wise?

L is doing great with physical developments but I'm wondering about language. He's a grunter, squeeler, "dada" kid. I'm sure one day there will be a language explosion but for now we're just waiting and doing the talking.

Re: Language Development

  • I have similar concerns with my grunting, whining nearly 17m old.

Our resident speech pathologist ::waves hi if she's reading:: gave me this like yesterday

    https://mommyspeechtherapy.com/?p=82

Eta: please note that the 12 to 18m one is stuff they look for in 18m olds...a 14m old wouldn't be expected to have all of that down.

  • I'm pretty positive Ellebelle (speech therapist) said they look for 5-25 words at 18 months so I definitely wouldn't worry since L has a while. N has said a lot of words, but not consistently, like I've heard them once or twice and then nothing. He'll be 17m on the 29th. My pedi said he was right on track so I'm not concerned at all.  They're probably just working on other ways of being awesome Wink

So THAT is her sn here.. makes sense. Yeah I think the link she gave me says 5 to 20 words. D is closer to 5 at almost 17m but he'll say them once or twice...and then not again. I'm thinking he's focusing his energy on other awesomeness...like bouncing in his crib at naptime ::SMH::

  • Does anybody know if they look for the same thing in children with dual language households?

I know they say it is perfectly normal for language to be "delayed" because they are trying to process two languages. Just curious how much that "delay" is.

ETA: How does sign language play a factor? Do they count signs as words or does it actually have to be verbal?

    I have no idea.

But I didn't talk until I was two and a half. And then it was in complete sentences. And if you ask my dad, I haven't shut up since. Stick out tongue

    Hehehehe, this makes me giggle.

Ellebelle gave me the link to her pinterest board with ideas to help promote speech stuff.  Saw this on it.  Maybe it will have some info relevant to your situation (BTW, I think it's awesome you're raising her bilingually, makes me wish one of us was fluent in another language so I could do that for D): https://alldonemonkey.com/2013/01/28/speech-development-in-bilingual-children-guest-post-from-playing-with-words-365/

Hahaha D! N holds the bars and jumps in his too, silly boys. I think jumping is actually an advanced skill though ;) I'll have to check out her pins and stop looking at desserts! We try, well my mom tries to teach N a few words in Italian, I haven't heard anything yet though. I'm not holding my breath on that.

Oh and Oops that was supposed to say 5-25 not 525 good grief lol. I couldn't remember if it was 5-25 or 5-20, 5-20 sounds even better to me :)

Thanks for the link! It was very interesting to know that the language delay thing is a myth.
