Maybe twins???

I went for an ultrasound today, I'm 4w5d, and saw 2 black spots. I quickly asked the tech were there just 2 sacs? No answer...I looked at my husband and said, "she's not answering me!" She goes, "I'm not really allowed to say..." OK, well.... While talking to the dr I asked about the 2 black spots. He says "Oh, you caught that, too..." Um, heck yeah, I caught that! He said that he couldn't confirm anything and he wasn't sure because my betas weren't really as high as a twin pg might imply, but maybe it was twins. I have another sono next friday. But, of course, now all I can think about is "Maybe, twins." I'm super excited because we always wanted twins, we have 2 kiddos already. I'm just curious if anyone had beta tests that didn't match with their multiple pg or what their initial U/S looked like? The tech didn't measure the other sac, that I noticed, which concerned me. Insight?

Re: Maybe twins???

  • Im really shocked a Dr would say that. Betas can be all over the place and vary widely. Most people Ive talked or chatted with say that they had regular range betas with their twins.... and a lot of ladies have said theyve had really high betas but only had singletons.

Betas are not an indicator of how many are in there. And high levels of HCG can be indicative of several things. What you need is that repeat u/s with good equipment.

  • Thats what I'm learing, about the betas. And he's an been an OB for over 30 years! Why he wouldn't just tell me one way or the other? I guess I just have to be patient for the next week :(

  • Ya, he sucks!! what an ass.

He probably didnt want to get your hopes up bc it's early. Ive had to wait for follow up u/s and it sucks.... I hope the week goes fast for you =)

I agree with this. Betas don't mean much as long as they are rising appropriately (48-72 hour doubling time). IMO two sacs = twins. It is, of course, very early. But he shouldn't have been so vague and secretive about things. If he has valid concerns, he should be discussing them with you. GL at your next scan!

  • Good luck! I didn't have my first us until I was 8weeks and we were surprised to find out we are having twins! Hope to see you back here!
  • My betas were always very low. I had an early u/s (6 weeks) due to bleeding and at that appointment they scheduled an u/s for 8 weeks to "rule out" twins (they didn't say it to me, but I saw them write it in my chart). As you can see, they didn't rule anything out at my next u/s! Good luck!

  • I think they're both trying to not say anything since they don't want to get your hopes up. my tech said it looked like twins, then didn't say congrats on twins til the second hb was measured

Ditto. And mine didn't even double in 48 hours. I was thinking I was going to m/c...but it was twins....I can't beleive all these doctors telling people that it could be twins based on betas...grr.

  • My betas would have indicated a singleton pregnancy. I wouldn't have known it was twins until the ultrasound at 6 weeks.
