safety gates??

Can anyone recommend gates?  I looked at target online and I am overwhelmed.  I need one for the top of stairs - this is a wall on one side and iron rail on the other...so I am not sure if pressure mounts work on the railing side?  It seems you would need to attach them with zip ties or something?!

Then I have two big openings (6 ft) -- one of them is two walls so a pressure mount should work.  The other opening has a wall and iron rail on the other side -- so again I am wondering if the pressure/hardware mount would work?  

 Another question about the iron railing around the top of my stairs; the slots are about  4.5 in -- is this safe or do I need some kind of mesh covering?

pressure mount won't work on the railings (and for safety are NOT recommended). Try amazon, they have ways to help limit your search by what you need (top of stairs, extra wide, walk through, etc) and have good pricing.

As for the mesh I would think that would be a good idea just to be safe. 

We just put up our first gate. it was pressure mount with the option to secure it to the wall and that is what DH wanted to do, just to be sure DS wouldn't be able to push it over as it is at the top of the stairs.

Pressure mounted gates are NOT for the top of the stairs. You need a gate that is secured with hardware. They make kits to secure the gates to the railings. Just search on amazon.

Baby gates are a huge PITA to find ones that work. Look on amazon to get a general idea of what's available. I would aslo sugguest going to the manufacturers websites to see the different solutions they have. Kidco and Cardinal Gates are two that I remember looking at. They both have mounting kits that you can get for different situations.
