to get rid of baby stuff or not

We have one girl (age 3 1/2) and one boy (age 2) and I am a saver.  So that means I have 3 1/2 years of girl clothes, 2 years worth of boy cloths and all the infant accessories every mom collects in the beginnig and I can't figure out if I should keep it or get rid of it.  I have no real need to get rid of it at this time, I've just been feeling an itch to get it all out of my house.  We have a ranch so we have a large basement with plenty of room to store it so thats not an issue.  We're not strapped for cash so I'm not pressured to sell it for money.  I've thought of finding a great cause and donating it all to that.  I guess I'm just holding onto it all because WHAT IF we have another child?  (Both of our kids were surprises so this is a totally rational fear Wink  I have EVERYTHING I need no matter the sex.  DH is done having kids "for now."  As am I.  Anyone in the same boat?  Should I save it all on the off hand in say, five years we want to have another?  Or should we just start over in 5 years if that's what we dicide?  I know this is probably sort of a silly question but it's what's going on in my world right now.  Any advice?  Thanks!!!

Re: to get rid of baby stuff or not

  • I'm kind of struggling with the same thing. All of our gear (car seats, jumperoo, swing, etc) is getting saved because I do daycare, and eventually I plan to pass the big stuff on to my sisters if they want it, or donate it if they don't.

But clothes... that's where I'm unsure. We are on the fence about #3. If we go for it, there will be no more than 3 years between DD2 and #3, so we wouldn't be saving clothes for much longer. And if hypothetical #3 is a boy we'd need all new stuff anyway after 2 girls. And since a lot of our baby clothes are from DD1, who is about to turn 3, they may be outdated styles by the time hypothetical #3 comes along, so I don't know, LOL.

I think I'm leaning towards keeping everything until we know for sure we're 110% done since we plan to make that decision in the next year or so. If we were pretty sure we were done, or weren't planning on another for 5 or more years, I'd probably get rid of everything including gear, since safety standards and styles change so quickly these days. But if there's any chance we'll have another within 1-2 years, I'd hold onto it all.

    Sorry, that was really rambling!

  • I kept everything of DD's until after I found out the sex of baby #2 DS. Thinking back I wish I would have just got rid off everything but the unisex stuff. Like carseat, high chair, jumperoo...etc. But if you know that you will know by xxx date, I would wait till then. Really..whats it going to hurt?

  • I would weed through. I would not get rid of a lot because what if you do have another, you are right. But with big stuff, in 5 years, there will be better, newer, snazzier stuff out there. You can also re-stock with stuff from CL.

I'd pare it all down, to be honest. Keep 1 big bin of clothes per stage.

  • I'd donate it all. If you decide later on to have another child, a baby shower would be acceptable to have to help out with expenses.
