Miscarriage/Pregnancy Loss

Bleeding after a natural miscarriage

Hi everyone, me again.

I had a natural miscarriage last Monday, 2/11. Started spotting in the morning and passed the sac and tissue around 6:30 that evening. Tuesday's ultrasound showed a clot that I took cytotec for and passed around 4am Wednesday morning. I was spotting, and then stopped spotting, and now I'm bleeding more heavily again. Not soaking pads in an hour or anything like that, even during the miscarriage I didn't get that, but this is like it was last Wednesday and Thursday again.

I haven't run, lifted anything, had sex, anything, and I want this to be over. It's so frustrating to be trying to move past this emotionally and then get this huge reminder. Does anyone know how long this will last? I had another U/S on Friday and it was clear so, I'm confused. Any thoughts? If this is going to keep happening, can I go running? Does continued bleeding mean a longer and longer time until I get my period?

Re: Bleeding after a natural miscarriage

  • I bled for 15 days after my natural miscarriage and I had an appointment 5 days afterward that said I was clear. I then had my first period 18 days after I stopped. Things are different for everyone but hope this kind of helps ease your mind a bit about how long this process lasts.

  • I took a Wondfo HPT to see if my HCG has dropped even more and it was a clear negative today. I had a positive LH test yesterday evening but I guess that could've been residual HCG. It's infuriating that every nurse/dr/midwife I talked to has a different opinion about when to start trying again. I understand that that means that there's no real right answer but what the hell? I want to get over this and on to the TTCAL board.

  • I'm so very sorry for your loss.

If you are concerned, you should call your doctor to make sure that you have in fact passed all the tissue. I had retained products and only realized 3 weeks later when I had to have a D&C.

It's likely normal but it wouldn't hurt to have it checked out.

  • They did an U/S Tuesday and Friday. Tuesday there was tissue, Friday there wasn't so :/ I guess it's a waiting game. See when the spotting stops, see when the HCG disappears. Thanks though.

  • I'm so sorry for your loss.  I know what you mean about it being a reminder :(  I started spotting on Monday, and our loss occurred on Valentine's day.  This is my second miscarriage (no d&c) and last time I bled and/or spotted for a month.  Then I got my period a few days later...so about 5+ weeks of bleeding or spotting total.  I think it is different for everyone and also depends how far along you are, but I hope for you it will be quick.
  • I am so sorry for your loss. I'm also sorry that you have to continue bleeding, as if you needed a reminder for what you've been through. I bled for 3 weeks, after I thought I had a natural miscarriage. When I went in for my 2 week f/u in the beginning of my 3rd week of bleeding, I had my Hcg levels drawn, and they had unexpectedly gone up. US a couple days later showed that it was ectopic. I will probably always be a little cautious, but would recommend following up with your OB, even though bleeding for a varied amount of time can be considered normal. Best wishes to you.

  • "I'm sorry you are going through this. This can definitely be normal. I can't answer whether it will take longer to get AF. One of the theories I've heard is that as your hormone levels continue to fall, more of lining is shed, just like when you get a normal period. So you lose some of it during the miscarriage and then it can pick up again as progesterone and HCG fall. Hope it doesn't last too long. Take care. "

That makes a lot of sense to me actually. Thanks!
