Question about Mono/Di twins

HI everyone, we had an ultrasound on Tuesday and they were able to see the separating membrane, finally. :) There is only one placenta. I haven't seen a MFM yet. My questions for all of you is I won't have another ultrasound with a MFM for 2.5 weeks. Is that too long? Should we be checking for TTTS sooner? Or is there nothing to do until then? I will be 17 weeks 4 days.

I just keep reading all this info about TTTS and it sounds like I should be monitored more closely. I am not sure what to think.

Thank you all in advanced.

Re: Question about Mono/Di twins

  • Mine were mo-di and even at the very end I was only having an u/s every two weeks.  Early on I had one every 4 weeks.  I think my schedule was something like 6 weeks (due to bleeding), 8 weeks (to "rule out" twins), 12 weeks (NT scan), 16 weeks, 20 weeks, 24 weeks, then every two weeks (because my cervix started shortening so my MFM wanted to see me more often).

A piece of advice - don't google TTTS!  Google gets you scary information with lots of worst case scenarios.  There's nothing that you can do to prevent it and your doctors will monitor you.  The best thing you can do for those babies is to relax and not stress out (which is nearly impossible, but worth trying).  Good luck!

  • I'm not sure about what the recommendations are, but I'm seeing my mfm every two weeks at this point. I'm having mo/di twins also.

  • I am pregnant with mo/di twins and they first saw the membrane at 10 weeks 5 days and then again at 12 weeks. At my 12 week ultrasound (NT scan) they told me I would be coming back for another ultrasound in 4 weeks, at 16 weeks, and then every 2 weeks after that.

My guess is since you just had an ultrasound, they are just scheduling you 2 weeks from then.

  • I was every two weeks. I was diagnosed with TTTS around 19 weeks. I had surgery exactly one week later. TTTS is pretty rare, but u/s every two weeks are sufficient until you show symptoms of TTTS.

TTC since May 2006. After 3 failed Clomid cycles, 2 failed Injectibles/IUIs, 2 failed IVFs and 1 failed FET, we moved on to adoption!

  • 17.5 weeks is fine IMO for your first MFM check. They didn't start doing my biweekly fluid checks for TTTS until 20 weeks, but I think they were supposed to start at 18 weeks.

  • I kind of have to disagree about trusting your doctors. Yes, there are many that ARE trustworthy, but there are.also a lot that are clueless about the fact that modi twins ARE higher risk than.di-di and.need to be.monitored.more.closely. with that being said, googling worst case scenarios can be avoided, however, i do believe it is important to.educate yourself and to.know what questions to.ask; and to be your babies advocate if.you.do.not agree with the course things are on. With modi twins the recommendation is scans every other week for.fluid and dopplers, starting at 16 weeks, with increase d.frequency if.anything ants it. Trust your mommy instinct.
  • Thank you everyone. At my 17 week ultrasound I am going to ask lots of questions to the MFM and I am going make sure they are monitored at least every 4 weeks.I am going to do my best to relax it is just so hard you want the best for your babies. I don't think I am going to relax until they are safely with us. :)

First I said "once I'm through the first tri I'll relax".  Then I said "one I hit 24 weeks I'll relax".  Then I said "once I hit 32 weeks I'll relax".  Then at 32 weeks I said "F it, I'll relax when they're here!".  There's just always something to worry about.  But it prepares you for having kids Smile

  • I think you are fine to wait 2 1/2 weeks to see the MFM - then you will get a plan from their.  I had mono/di twins (found a membrane at 12 weeks) and didn't see an MFM until 20 weeks. I started u/s every other week from their.

That being said - it can't hurt to call and see if you can move up the MFM appointment if you have any concerns.  Twins give you lots of reasons to be scared.  My mantra the whole pregnancy was "please over-monitor me and over-react"

  • I had u/s every 2 weeks from 10w-30w. From 30-32w, I had them every week. From 32-34w, I had them twice a week (PTL, cervical shortening). 2.5 weeks sounds good! GL mama. That's around the same time I found out the sex of mine. :)

  • We found out mono/di at 12 weeks and I'm scheduled for u/s every 2 weeks unless they see something.
  • I see my perinatologist every 2wks for u/s and dopplers. I'm pretty sure that's the standard unless some other issues pop up. It's good your seeing an MFM for your twin pregnancy so I would try not to worry. My doc suspected TTTS at 18wks but after seeing the MFM in Houston we were cleared, thank God. I know it's hard and I thought once I got to 24wks I would be able to relax but there's always another milestone to reach. I'm getting used to the idea of never relaxing again, lol, I'm a mom what can I say. Congrats and GL!

  • We found out we were having Mono/Di twins at our 13 week genetic screening appointment, boy were we surprised! I haven't gone to see a MFM. I had another sonogram at 17 weeks (learned that we were having girls) and have had a sonogram and Dr follow up every other week since then. I am currently 24 weeks. My Dr. hasn't seen a reason to send me to a specialist but said if anything unusual comes up they wouldn't hesitate. I'm comfortable with this situation bc I feel like they have been watching me closely enough to ease my worries.

  • I have mo/di twins as well and this is my first pregnancy on top of it. My MFM is two hours away so he has just advices my OB on how to proceed but his recommendations were amniotic fluid and cervical checks every two weeks and the starting at 20 weeks add in growth sscans to that. I just had my last visit with him for the 18 week scan and am now strictly with my OB unless they see anything that raises a red flag. He also advised that I do not go past 37 weeks. Hope this helps
