What should I do....

So here's the deal. We love being able to devote every minute we can to DS. We had always said that we were one and done, but if we were blessed with a happy accident we would gladly add to our family. With that said, I was just asked if I would like to sell my breast pump. I got it through my insurance so I didn't pay the $300 out of pocket for it, but I'm afraid to let it go in the off chance we do get pregnant again. We aren't trying for another one, and if we know it is fertile time we cover up, but there is always the chance for an accident. What should I do? Sell it and take a chance, or keep it in my stash for awhile until we know for sure we are done with kids?

  • Honestly, I don't think you should sell something that you got for free.

Oh I paid on it, just not the full amount, so I wouldn't ever dream of selling it for full retail value. I got a heavy discount, but it was still $$ out of pocket, just not the full $300. So it really wasn't free, that isn't how my insurance works. But thanks for your input.

  • If you need the cash sell it. You know how the insurance works. Do you want it laying around collecting dust, taking up space and not being used. You can sell it to get cash and help someone else by giving them a deal. But it's your pump. If you're not ready to get rid of it hang on. Nobody'll get hurt if you keep it.

    I totally would...

    Me, too!
In fact, I had to pay out of pocket in August for a pump but then was eligible for a free one in January. So, I got the free one. I plan to sell it to reimburse myself for some of the money I paid out of pocket for mine!

  • One thing to keep in mind is that your pump may not last for an entire second child nursing if you use it a lot.  A lactation consultant told me often they will wear out for a second child, but I exclusively pump so she may have been taking that into consideration.
  • I'd sell it. Pretty sure Obama just passed a 2013 law that would allow you to get a free pump if you need another one.
  • If you still have insurance, I say sell it, since a new pump is recommended for each child so the insurance will cover a new pump were you to get pregnant again. If it's something that you would have to pay for out of pocket, then you might want to hold on to it a little bit longer.

  • My friend is trying to sell her PISA and cant cuz so many people get them through insurance from obamacare. You cant even get 50 now... just keep it for a bit longer and make a decision when you get ride of all baby stuff.
  •  If you paid money for it then I don't see anything wrong with selling it, which I would do since you aren't going to actively try for another.  Or you could wait a year or two & if you still feel one & done then sell it.

I would sell it, especially if you're going to have the sameinsurance in the future. No reason to hold onto it if you may not use it again. I don't see any problem with selling something that you got for free. Why does it matter how much you paid for the pump out of pocket? Also, if it may be a few years before you possibly have another child then you would just be holding on to it for all that time.

personally, if I get something for free I pass it along to others when I'm done w it.

  • I say sell it.  IF you KNEW you would be having another one in a year or two then I would hold on to it.  But I don't think I would hold on to mine just in case there was a surprise baby.

  • Keep it. It's hard to find a good breast pump that you like.

This earns a big eye roll from me.

Anyway, I think you should keep it on the off chance you'll use it again.

  • I would sell it! If you need another one in the future hopefully your insurance will cover it or some of it.

  • I am in exactly the same boat. Except it is everything of DD and we have a small house so I really should get rid of the stuff we don' t use anymore. But if there is a chance we will have another one, I don't want to have to buy the same stuff that I would have already had. So, for now I am holding on to it.
