Babies: 6 - 9 Months

opinion poll

Hello all!

DD has another diaper rash with at least one spot that is open and ulcerated.  This time she also has a rash around her mouth.  She also has a wet cough, and, as of tonight, a fever of 100.1.

The day care says that she has been gnawing non-stop (no teeth yet) and they are convinced that she is teething.  I really haven't seen her doing what I would consider to be extra mouthing.  However, I don't see her all day long when she is at day care so I may be missing things.  I have just heard that she is 'definitely' teething for about three months now so I take comments like that with a grain of salt.

The pediatrician says that it looks like an adverse food reaction... but here's the thing.  She doesn't eat anything but breast milk.  She has been refusing food for months now.  Last week on Friday she ate some baby oatmeal with breast milk (~ 4oz worth which is unheard of with her) and Saturday she ate some sweet peas, but she has refused everything since then and broke with the diaper / face rash yesterday (Tuesday).

So what do you think?  Could this be a reaction to food 3+ days later?  Could this be a reaction to teething?  Could the cough be related to teething or a food reaction?  Could the slight fever be related to teething?

I have been googling and it seems like all symptoms have been linked to food reactions and, also, to teething.  I am at a loss as to how to help DD.  The diaper rash is not clearing up as fast as I would like (although it has only been one day there is not a great deal of improvement on the diaper cream recommended by the pedi).

Any thoughts / experience would be appreciated.  TIA!

Re: opinion poll

  • Idk but it could be food right? Bc they say to wait 4 days in between introducing a new food?
  • Loading the player...
  • She is drinking your breastmilk and could very well be reacting to something YOU ate.

This is how it was with my DD.  I had to eliminate everything from my diet: dairy, eggs, peanuts, soy...  Because she was reacting to what I was eating.

Have you started an elimination diet?

  • I agree with this, my husbands dad and uncle are allergic to shrimp, I was eating some at Christmas and about a day or so later she broke out into a rash all over her back and legs and everywhere but her face, it was bad for a day or so, then cleared up. I didn't know they were allergic or I wouldn't have eaten them just because it might affect her! She already has my dad's sensitive skin and has to have specific laundry detergent!
  • Ooo - this is interesting.  DD has a mouth mask rash so I just assumed it would be from something that she ate not something that I ate.  Is it possible to have just a rash around her mouth in a reaction to something in my breast milk?  I had crab and lobster salad on Valentine's day and it is the first time that I've had shellfish since she was born.
