Straw Sippy Cups

Has anyone tried and liked a straw sippy cup?

I am trying to get DD to use a sippy and she seems to get it but only while laying down on the floor. When she tried sitting up she will not tilt it back but sucks like she is using a straw. I cant seem to help her make the connection between tilting the cup back and getting a drink.

Re: Straw Sippy Cups

  • Ds1 didn't get it until around 8-8 1/2 mths old and only would take the hard plastic topped sippies.  Ds3 is already tipping it back and loves his little nuby ones. DS2 on the other hand refused regular sippies so I went with straw sippies from about 7 months old on. He never took anything else until he switched to regular cups at 18mths old. We used nuby straw cups that I got at target.

I let the baby have it in their booster seat while eating or right after they finish eating. And with ds3 the ones with handles on the side is what is working for him. It's all about finding the right one that your baby likes.

  • My DS loves the playtex sippies with the straw. I got the ones that said 4mo+ on it and he uses them well. Burps a lot after though. But he can use them himself and our independent little man loves that!

  • We have a straw sippy, but DS just chews on it. It took him a while to figure out regular spout sippy cupes, but he finally had success with when I filled it up almost to the brim. He doesn't have to tip it as far to get the water out that way. I also really like the Tommee Tippee Explora trainer cups. They are not spill-proof, but I actually like that for teaching him cause and effect.

  • DS uses the sippy cups from Tupperware, they look like those classic 70's ones with the white lid.  He sort of has the hang of it.  He puts it in his mouth like he's supposed to but he doesn't bring it up high enough so I tip it for him.
  • We have a Zoli straw cup. We set it down in front of him and he picked it up, got the straw in his mouth, and sucked right away. He just sucked too hard for the first few days and would end up coughing and dribbling the water back out. He got the hang of it after a few tries and how does just fine. We haven't tried a sippy cup, but he does know how to tilt up and hold his own bottle on the rare occasions he gets one.
