As I can't seem to get a real person on the phone at the Employment Development Office, I thought I'd ask my questions on here!
How long did it take for you to receive your disability check? 6 weeks? 8 weeks?
If it arrived so late, was it one lump sum, or did you continue to receive checks every two weeks even after your maternity leave was over?
Did Paid Family Leave easily roll over or did you have to re apply for that after SDI?
I am scheduled to deliver in April and have been desperately doing my research to figure out how to avoid this money delay as much as possible. Two coworkers just recently gave birth and had serious issues with EDD. One girl never received her check throughout the 12 weeks that she was off, and the second has yet to receive her check. She is going on 5 or 6 weeks of maternity leave.
If you received your check more quickly than this, what's your secret? Did you do anything beforehand that helped speed the process?
Re: EDD and Pregnancy Disability Leave
I submitted all the paperwork for mine on 2/4, and got all the paperwork and a loaded debit card with 1 weeks worth (they don't do paper checks anymore) yesterday.
I couldn't tell you how it rolls over into PFL, since I'm not there yet.
I can tell you that I had filed unemployment for 1 month in 2007, and got married in 2010, changing my name with relevant agencies. All my paperwork and the debit card is in my maiden name - I spent about 30 mins waiting for a real person to figure stuff out yesterday, and I need to send them copies of DL, SSN, and marriage license.. Pain in the butt!
Good luck!
That is good news! I'm glad that not everyone is having to wait that long. Did you file your paperwork in the hospital on the day you delivered?
I filed my paperwork the day I stopped working - two weeks before my due date. (And STILL haven't delivered.. So keep that in mind when you're planning your leave - I didn't expect to deliver EXACTLY on my due date, but I wasn't expecting to go DAYS past it. I guess that's me being a FTM!)
You can file the first day of your leave, up to 4 weeks before delivery. Also as a heads up, EDD is transitioning into requiring an online submission (I think the official switch is in March or April). My HR gave me papers to fill out, and when I went to Kaiser, they said they only process electronically in advance of the switch.
The paperwork I got yesterday has something for me to fill out to let them know the day I deliver - it states that they request it be filed online, and filing with papers could result in delay. Maybe the people you know were still using the paper forms and that caused their delay?
Hi! I just received information through the Bump on a law office that might be able to help you...

I filed on March 3 and last week finally got ahold of someone to inquire about my amount. My debit card should be coming anyday (or so they say.) So annoying!
Kisha the only way I got ahold of someone was to call at 8am and then I waited on the phone for almost an hour......
