Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Traveling tips?

I asked this on my BMB too.

I'm traveling alone with Lauren next month and we're flying. The flight will be about 2-2.5 hours. Any airport tips? I'm planning to gate check her stroller and check her carseat. There will be a pack n play there for us when we arrive.

Just bring toys and snacks? She's flying as a lap child so luckily she likes to cuddle. She doesn't walk yet so I'm planning to probably wear her in the airport and push our carry-on stuff in her stroller.

Re: Traveling tips?

  • We definitely need a stroller, so I have to bring one. I won't need a jacket so I might just not wear one?

  • I traveled on a 4hr flight and 2hr flight when Blake was 8m old.  I took my umbrella stroller and gate checked it.  I did not have to take a carseat because my sis (who we were visiting) had one for us when we arrived.  I have heard not to check it with baggage because they can damage it when throwing it all over the place and you would never know.

When you go through security, you need to take your milk (formula or breast) out and put it in one of those bins.  They will test one bottle, so plan on spending a little extra time with security.  Our flight was actually not too bad.  He flew as a lap child too.  Slept most of the way out, and then played with toys.  Good luck!

  • I just returned from a week in Mexico.  It was 4+ hrs going and about 3.5 on the way home.  We checked in very early but we were still sat separately so going I was a 1 woman show.

It worked out that it was nap time at takeoff.  He slept for that part and for almost 2 hours.  I wanted to have him drink his bottle at takeoff but the poor guy was so hungry I couldn?t hold it off any longer.  I brought different toys and continued to give him new things once he woke up.  He chewed on a bagel for a while, jumped on my lap, looked at strangers, etc.  He slept for the landing too.  Coming home was actually worse.  He was more fussy but I had DH.  He ate cheerios, played, stood on my lap and looked around, we sang songs, etc.

Luckily, it seems like his ears were not an issue.  He tugged at them a few times but he didn?t cry.  I brought a tote type bag and kept it open in between my feet for easy reach.  I wiped down everything as soon as we sat.  I wore him for boarding and brought the stroller too.  They had a special line at Newark for families or others with special liquids and they didn?t even check my bags.  On the way home they did and just confirmed my items were for the baby.

It was really not bad at all but since your flight is short and you have a cuddler (mine isn?t) you?ll probably be fine.
