ASD & Dealing with Death

Hi! I have not posted here in a while. My DD is 4y4m and has ASD. Last week my grandpa passed away, we were very close and he and DD we great buddies. She knows things are different but, I know she does not really get it, at all. I took her to his house because I needed to get some things from there and she used her play phone there and said, "help pawpaw get down" (she understands he is "high in the sky" - she did not understand heaven at all). During this difficult week DD's puppy broke (destroyed) her elbow escaping from her little area. We spent the middle of the night at the emergency vet (dh was at work so I had to get her up and take her with me). She spent a few days in a "cast" and yesterday her right front paw/arm was amputated. The area where her arm was (amputated to the shoulder) is not covered and that has to be weird/scary for her. I work overnight so I was not home last night when DH brought our puppy home. He said DD did okay when he took her out of the crate and let her see. DH said DD said, "oh no, ouchy".

Anyway, my point with all of that is, she had an "okay" day at school yesterday, she always has a good day. Teacher said she was "touchy" in the a.m. and very quiet in the .pm. She was very hard to wake yesterday and even harder today. She burst into tears 3 times before she even got to school this morning (once was just because I finally had to pick her up out of bed). It's clear the events of the past week are affecting her but, I don't know what to do to help her. Her ability to understand is pretty limited and while she is doing amazing with her speech for her she is not really able to express her feelings about what's been going on. I am of course being very patient and I went ahead and emailed her teacher last night to let her know what's been going on this past week. Other than that, I'm at a loss and fee like I should be doing more.

TIA

Re: ASD & Dealing with Death

  • Thank you.

I wish there was a right answer here. I have been talking about my grandpa b/c we were close and it's hard not to!

She's getting used to her puppy's new look. I know the stitches are what bother DD but, as the day goes she interacts with puppy more.
