Whining/Crying Toddler Resources

Hi all- lately my H has had such a short fuse with our two year old and responds to her crying with taking a toy away or something that doesn't really make any sense to me. I am trying to look for some gentle, natural and logical consequence based resources but am unsure what to google. I remember someone posting some woman's blog(?) about the steps to take, as in "validate the behavior, name the feeling, etc".

 Thanks in advance!

Re: Whining/Crying Toddler Resources

  • I get your DH. Whining and crying and not telling me what is wrong? Drives me batty.

I don't have resources, but I try to take a deep breath and remind myself that usually he whines when he is tired and that he whines because he doesn't know how to express himself rather than deliberately trying not to talk to me.

Then I guess. I start with "are you mad? Sad? Hurt? Scared?" One at a time, till he nods.

Then I try to figure it out. "You're mad bc we said it's bedtime and you want to play, right?"

I try not to "feed into it" and offer snuggles each time he pitches a fit, but when he really gets going I will ask if he wants to be alone while he calms down or get cuddles, and that we won't talk about it till he is calmer.

Having a way to handle it helps my temper.
