stop using monitor in toddlers room?

Our second child is due in a month and a half and we still are using the video monitor in DS's room.  When did you stop using the monitor in your toddlers room?  I am so tempted to just buy a second one because it is so convienent to just be able to look at the video monitor instead of going into his room and risking waking DS.  What did you do??

Re: stop using monitor in toddlers room?

  • We bought a second camera for ours and have one in each kid's room.  Sometimes I still like to check on DD without going in there and waking her up.  Call me crazy if you want, but it gives me peace of mind. :)

  • We bought a second camera, and our monitor toggles between the two cameras. Since DD1 is across the house from us, it makes it easier on us to know whether we need to go to her, or she's just making noise.

  • We bought a second camera. I'm not ready to give up the monitor yet.

  • We gave up the monitor when she was 1 1/2 years old.
  • We bought a second monitor when we had DS.  Now DD's monitor is seriously on it's last legs, and right before we transition to a big girl bed.  I'm not above buying yet a third one just for that purpose.  It's soooo hard to give up the video monitor!

  • I'm due in June and we will be purchasing another monitor so I can keep an eye on DD and the baby.  I have no idea when we will stop using the monitor with DD - she's 3.  Maybe when she stops napping?
  • We are using a 21 year old sound only baby monitor and have since she was born. (And we are still using it and will continue to do so for a while) Why not just get a plain sound monitor. Probably much cheaper. I would think that a video monitor for a toddler is overkill but then again we never had one to begin with. I guess I could see it if your toddler is in his room playing by himself while you are in the kitchen (or something) and want to keep an eye on him but if it is really just for when he is sleeping I wouldn't do it.

  • We turned the monitor off at 4 months (when I went back to work). I'm a mean mommy, but it's worked just fine for us ever since.
  • We never used a monitor with DD. Her room was right next to ours. Now she's a few rooms over, but the acoustics in our house are amazing, so we can easily hear her when she calls for us. I don't plan on getting one for DS, as his room is across the hall from ours and we'll just leave his door open a crack to be able to hear him.

  • We have a sound only monitor in each of the girls rooms and I don't see that changing any time soon. Even in our small house I can't always hear DD1 when she wakes or if she's getting into trouble while she's supposed to be napping.

  • We got a second camera so we'll have one in each room.  To those saying get a sound one, we don't actually use it for sound, it's for spying only in the toddler room.  We actually don't even have it turned on except when we want to spy and see what's going on.  We can hear him without it but sometimes he cries in his sleep and it's nice to know if he's laying down crying or at the door crying.

I also like for nap time to see when he falls asleep since he'll sometimes play quietly in his room before he falls asleep.

  • We stopped using the monitor around 8 months old.  If I want check on her I'll go in there.

This is exactly what we use it for now.  No volume.  I am thinking a second one is the way to go

  • My son will be 2 and a half when the new baby gets here in April.  I bought a second monitor and plan to continue to use one with our toddler until he is developmentally ready to come get me or my husband if he needs us (he's not even close to being there yet).
  • I stopped using mine shortly after he turned 1. I recently plugged it back up but I never heard him or anything so I don't use it anymore. I only had a sound one. I would suggest just putting the one you have in the new baby's room. Unless your house is huge, you don't really need it after 2!
  • If it were me, I'd just get another camera.  I really like being able to quickly check in on DS if I hear something in the night... from the comfort of my bed.  :)

I also move the camera to the living room and bring the monitor into the bathroom with me when I take a shower.  It's just useful :)

Don't need one after 2?  You've never met my toddler!  Plus, I'm really going to want it once she's out of the crib.  That's when the trouble really starts!

  • Is there a specific brand that will toggle between the two cameras, or should most do that?
  • We never had a video monitor just audio but I gave it up just after he turned 1.

  • When they were not in cribs b/c they would get up & walk around & sleep in different places and it ended up being kind of frustrating to look & see an empty bed or hear something & not know what it was etc. But since you have #2 on the way if you like having one for #1 and want to get a second- you can use the second camera on teh older one in a playroom or basement or something when you are comfortable letting him play alone one day...so it doesn't really end when you don't want/need it in the bedroom.
  • We moved in August and never set the monitor back up.  (DS was 4 months shy of his 3rd birthday.)
