Is that what most people do? When we go from cab to hotel, do we install the car seat in the cab? Is it better to rent a car? I don't think we'll really want to drive anywhere, though. How do people "pack" their car seat?

If you bought a seat for your LO, take the carseat on the plane. It is safest for baby and the other passengers.  Checking carseats can be dangerous because you never know how baggage handlers will treat your seat.  There is a YouTube video of a guy chucking carseats onto the tarmac which would make me uncomfortable.  How do you know the seat hasn't been damaged like in a crash?  It may look fine but the plastic could have been stressed or strained.  If you don't have a seat for your LO, I would check the seat at the gate and hope there was an extra seat on the plane.  Many times they will allow you to use the carseat if there is an empty seat.  I would not be comfortable using a seat from a rental company because you don't know the history of the seat or how it's been cared for. Also, if you show up and they don't have a proper seat (I.e. they only have a seat that can be installed forward facing or an expired seat) you will be in a bind.
