Back on birth control and what are you using?

Well... Hi!  I have been away from TB for the past two months... my little sweetie is two months old today.  Keeping up with my 1.5 and 3.5 yr old has been a lot of work too!  Anyway...

Hubs is on the list for his vasectomy, but we have been told it could be a year before all is said and done.  It can be 6-8 months for the referral and 2 month wait for the surgeon and another 3 months until the snip is fully good.  Anyway.  We want to be rid of condoms, but I am not sure what to go to.  I have heard Mirena is good for long term birth control, but we're only in need of a year's worth.  I have heard the combo pill is bad for milk supply, and the mini pill isn't that effective.  Three babies is enough for us!  Please give me your BC stories... I need to make some decisions, but some reviews would be helpful first!

I would get the Mirena. It's best to be on BC even with the snip. That way if it reverses or fails you have a back up method in place. Also, you won't have to remember pills. I got mine in last week. No BC pills for 5 years.

There's implanon a 3 yr implant into the arm. Or DepoProvera, which I love every 3 month shot either under the skin or into the muscle depending on which version you go with.

You cannot nurse on these methods though.

i had the nuva ring before DS. just change it once a month. but i dont know if you can nurse with it

I second the Mirena. I've had no supply issues since getting mine.

My husband just had his vasectomy and I got my mirena about two weeks before that. My midwife said a lot of women do this so they don't have to have a period. Sounds good to me.

Lurker popping in...I dont think this is true. I'm on implanon and am breastfeeding. I made sure my doctor knew that and double checked that it wouldnt effect my supply. I haven't had any problems with it at all.

You can nurse on both implanon and depo. Trust me. I am on depo and am breastfeeding. Both are progesterone only just like mirena.

I would do Mirena. Like others have said it's good to have the back-up. But also just b/c it's good for 5 years doesn't mean you have to keep it the whole time. I had mine for 9 months and then we decided to have kids... My NP was very understanding even though we'd had the conversation before insertion about kids...

Guess I am a little weird-ed out about having something inside all the time like with the Mirena.  I know... no real science behind that... just makes me feel odd.  And, does everyone with a vasectomy also use a back up?  I mean... why bother?  I understand the V can not be 100%, but our reason to go through all of that would be to not use BC ever again.  I am leaning toward the mini-pill with no real effects on milk supply and would be a short term fix while we wait for the vasectomy.  But, I also worry about the effectiveness... Not sure what we will decide on.

the problem w the mini pill is that you have to take it at the exact same time every day if you don't it's effectiveness is greatly reduced. i worked at planned parenthood for 3 years before the mirena was on the market and saw too many breast feeding moms on the mini pill have an unintended pregnancy. for that reason alone i would not be comfortable on the mini pill.

i used the mirena for 5 years before we started trying to get pregnant. i loved it. i never noticed any side effects and never had a period, what's not to love? i would have a mirena even if my husband had a vasectomy just to not have my period.

I am on Nexplanon (new name for implanon), I EBF and have not had any supply issues. It is good for 3 years. They numb your arm then put it in. My arm was sore for a couple days but it was not bad at all. I did not like the idea of an IUD either, checking for strings etc. There is no way I wouldn't know if this came out. GL

We plan on V; got the copper IUD in the meantime. Didn't like the idea of something inside before, but wanted to skip hormone bc gained weight when on minipill previously and didn't trust self to take at exat time each day if I can barely remember my multivitamin. Dr recc this because good for 10 years and no hormone; had it for 2 wks so far ... yellow mucus discharge. Go in to get placement checked next week. In general, wouldnt trust any single method since we're done with one. Dr said BF plus condoms would cover us in the beginning ... DH and I don't trust that combo though. Figure V plus IUD when looking at cycle calendar, and add condoms during fertile phases. Until V, have those others.
