Hello!
MY DS is 3 he was born 10 weeks early weighing 2 pounds 10 ounces and spent the first 7 weeks of his life in the NICU. He was pretty much delayed with every milestone accept for standing since Birth and was severely speech delayed. We did Ei for the first 18 months of his life and than we switched to private therapy since it was cheaper than going through EI. He has been with the same speech therapist for the last 2 years and has made great progress with his speech but, still has a way to go.
When he turned 3 we had him evaluated for the special needs preschool through the school system and he qualified and he started that in November. Once he started we noticed that he seemed out of control all of sudden with everything and the teacher kept insisting that he had behavior issues. In January I got a call from child protective services informing me that his teacher got physical with him and cursed at him and it was witness by some one else who reported it to them. I pulled Dh out of the preschool while the investigation is pending. He has been going to a full day day care but, they are having some issues with him since he isn't engaging in activities or with other children.
His speech therapist and I both believe that he has ADHD. He does have a lot of symptoms that are borderline for Autism and ADHD but, he is very social and engages with every one he comes across ( I know that doesn't mean anything). He doesn't seem to be able to focus on anything other than thing that he wants to to focus on like playing with his cars, trucks, Puzzles or watching movies. I just set up an appointment with developmental pediatrician for next week we were luck enough to get in right away since some one just canceled since they usually have 6 month wait. We plan on getting Lo back into the special needs preschool at another school after our evaluation with the development pediatrician.
Sorry so long tried to make this as short as possible.
Does any one have any tips for a first visit to developmental pediatrician?
If your child goes to Day care does he or she go to a special day care or regular day care?
Does day care do anything special for your child?
Re: New Here with some Questions
DS2 is also 3 and he should be starting the developmental (special needs) preschool soon.
My child goes to an in-home daycare currently.
My DCP has a SN son so she is familiar with how to help DS2 and how to teach him new things (they are diagnosed with the same thing)...both of which she has done. I have therapy AND her to thank for DS2's progress.
That's a horrible hand you've been dealt with by the school district- I'd be livid. We started with the school district and heard a tenative ASD diagnosis due to speech delays. That was at 19 months when we started EI preschool. Our regular pedi referred us to a ST for speech delay and we started private ST as well. We waited until DS was almost 3 before going through the developmental pedi process and eval. I wanted to have a clearer look at what we were dealing with. His pdd-nos diagnosis was confirmed then. Our doctor recommended a SN inclusive private preschool in addition to his public EI preschool. That private preschool is also his extended daycare. We tried 2 in-homes that weren't a great fit, then a better church center, but ultimately he needed the structure and patience that came from a SN daycare. At his church center, which was awesome, he tended to just drift to the sidelines. He wasn't a squeaky wheel, so no one would work to engage him. When he has behavioral difficulties, his SN daycare instituted a "token economy" whereby he gets special treats and toys for good behavior. So that accomodation exists. It's a great place.
Thanks. Believe me I am beyond Livid. I feel like right now we haven't found the right fit but, I'm scared to keep moving him. My son is the same way he's very lovable and polite so he get's away with just doing his own thing which I think is hurting him.
