Does your LO play well independently?

My DD is 2.5 years old and loves to play by herself.  I sit on the floor and watch her quite a bit, but I feel like there is never room for me in her play.  If I get out a puzzle, she doesnt gravitate over, just keeps doing what she is doing.  Sometimes I wonder where I fit in.  Anyone else have a LO that plays well independently?  Is this a concern I should have?

Re: Does your LO play well independently?

  • My DD loves playing independently. I usually don't even know when she wakes up because she just plays quietly in her room until I come get her.

I try to get involved in whatever she is doing. If she is playing in her kitchen I'll go over and tell her I'm hungry can she make me something, or ask her to pour me coffee, etc. If she's playing with her dolls I'll pick one up and play too. I also just try to talk to her a lot. Ask her what she's doing, etc.

  • My DD is also around 2.5 yr old and sometimes plays well independently. She is really into pretend right now so sometimes I see her doing things and not quite sure what the heck it is she is doing until I ask. My parents watch her for me (work full time) and my dad plays a ton with her. Sometimes I think when she gets home, she likes to do her own thing for a little while. We also have an iPad that she loves to play on. Some of those games are so cute and really educational.

  • Lucas does. Nothing to be concerned over, it's good that she can play independently.

  • yeah our 28 month old does pretty well- especially when playin with her princess castle and when she is looking in the mirror playing with all her stuffed animals.

However, lately she wants us to do everything with her- come over hear mommy, lets go downstairs mommy, go in princess hutt mommy.  And when we have company over- forget it- she is pulling thier hands to play with her!  they cant even get a drink in thier hands before a little people, dolls, figurenes, ext.

  • DD plays independently all the time. I'm either in the same room or the next room over (still visible), so if she does want me to participate or needs help, she can get me. She also does "quiet time" for 2 hrs in her room instead of a nap now. Even when she was an itty bitty, she liked spending awake/play time in her crib. However, she is a mini-me and I greatly value alone time too.

  • She has her moments.

I started babysitting a little guy a year younger than her about 6 months ago. Now she's so used to him to play with that she's not very good about playing on her own. I wish she was better about playing independently!

  • No.  He is 28 months and wants me in everything.  It is quite tiring.

  • Sounds like OP needs to be more assertive and jump in on the game. Don't wait to be asked to play!
