Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Those that have sleep trained...HELP!

I've read 2 books now - the sleep easy solution and Dr.Ferbers book. We ferberized my son with great success as an older infant. Here is my issue. DD is going down at 7pm. Last night she cried from 11:30-12:30. I did progressive.checks with her. Then she woke for her 3am feeding. Usually she's been getting up to start her day at 5 but when you add the hours up, it's definitely not enough. She lost an hour crying. Her total night sleeping time was 8 hours. Book suggest a minimum of 10.5 hours at night for babies her age. Web she wakes, she's napping in her swing within 45 min.

So, my question is, when she wakes at 5, do I do the progressive checks all over again since she is clearly still exhausted when she wakes? I just feel bad making her cry at "morning", but she's clearly not sleeping enough at night. HELP!

  • When my LO wakes up at 5 i give him a bottle. if he falls asleep during it, back to bed! but if he is still awake at the end, we start our day.  i don't know if it is worth having him CIO so close to wake up time. that would make the start of my day pretty stressful. but i totally can relate to the early riser. my guy has been one for months! :)

Its frustrating...especially when you know they aren't getting enough sleep at night and napping within 45 min of waking up!

  • it is frustrating... especially when he wakes up crying... i know he is still tired and could sleep longer but I am usually too tired to fight it. i i usually try to make him stay awake for two hours after the early wake up...we do a normal schedule just push everything back an hour or two.

  • Is this only the first night?  I would give it a few nights and she'll probably adjust her schedule and sleep later after that 3am feeding.

I would probably try a morning of letting her cry at 5am and see if she goes back to sleep.  When my LO wakes that early, he will usually go back to sleep until 6:30 or 7:00.

  • We did. DS went to bed around 8pm and his wake up time was set at 6am. If he woke up at 5am, we did checks. We never got him out of bed before 6am.

But, when we started doing naps, it was obvious that we needed to bump his bedtime up, which seems like what you might need to do if your DD isn't getting enough rest at night. At this age, your LO should have a solid 11-12 hours of uninterrupted sleep at night and at least 3.5 hours during the day. Putting DS down to sleep earlier did not result in an earlier wake up time...just more sleep for him, which is what he had needed.

Now, he goes down around 6-6:30 and wakes up between 6-6:30. Ferber took about five days until he learned to put himself to sleep, so I would give it a few more nights. The first two nights, he cried for about two hours with check-ins and then woke up around 3 and 4am. We just did check-ins and now, a month and some change later, he just naturally wakes up after 6am. If he wakes up before 6am, which almost never happens, he just lays there and plays, like he knows he isn't getting up until 6am.

DS hasn't eaten in the MOTN in almost three months and unless she's going through a growth spurt or something, there isn't any need to. We never had to really break MOTN feeding habits, but his pediatrician told us at his 4 month appointment that he shouldn't be waking up to eat in the MOTN (and he wasn't at the time).
