Thoughts on Jolyon?

I've never heard of this name before. I'm looking for kneejerk reactions, indepth analysis, and if you can, teasibility.

Re: Thoughts on Jolyon?

  • Hi mj!! I know Penelope has grown so much. I think back on her naming process and I miss the name, Marigold, but she is such an Annelise. Too bad we're two and through. This is for a friend, and even though we haven't chatted in ages, you are just as keen as ever, thank you!

  • What is this name and how is it pronounced? It looks terrible in print and I don't have high expectations.

  • This is honest, not trying to be mean at all lol.

In my head I pronounced it "Jolly-on" which for some reason made me instantly think of hard on. Usually I don't put down other peoples names but as soon as I saw Jolyon that's what I thought of. I could just be super tired and need to go to bed though haha.

So there is your teasibility I suppose. Maybe I took it a little far. I don't think many people will think that when they see it. But well when you see said hard on you say the guy is "happy" so thinking hard on when I pronounce Jolly-on is legitimate I think.

I'm all about unique though. Is it like jollyon on jawl-yun?

  • Ah, Joe le on sounds a lot better than what I was doing :D I actually like how that sounds, but would definitely try to spell it different. Maybe Joelyon or Idk, I really don't like the Jolyon.

  • Unfortunately the first thing that popped into my head was a number of jokes involving getting one's jollies on. I know it isn't pronounced like that, but I think it would frequently mispronounced.

  • I have literally never heard this name in my whole life. I was pleasantly surprised to see the history behind it, when I searched Behind the Name, but at first glance it does kind of look like an invented name. I think I prefer Julian or Leon.

  • My knee jerk reaction was "What?" and before reading the correct pronunciation, I also thought it was "Jolly-on". I love Julian, but I just can't quite get on board with this one. Sorry!

  • I met a Jolyon recently and it was the first time I'd heard the name.  I didn't know at first how to spell it or that it was related to Julian (which I do like very much).  I don't side-eye it, knowing it's a legit name, but I can see how someone with that name would be teased and much prefer Julian.

    This.  Julian is nice though!

  • I have heard this name before. Unfortunately, I heard it in association with the horribly annoying insurance agent, Jolyon Wagg, from the Tintin comics.

    Would not use.

  • My initial reaction was "that's a made-up, you-neek mess" (sorry). Now that I know that it's a medieval form of Julian (thanks mj.reilly)  I like it slightly (ever so slightly) more, but that's more out of an appreciation for older names. I much prefer Julian.
