Food Allergy

How did you know?

Hi all...I am a FTM to a 3 week old and I am new to the food allergy journey. I am just curious how you knew/how your LO was diagnosed with MPI or MSPI? DS currently has awful gas, fussiness, pulling off the breast, congestion, mucous in his stools at every BM, diarrhea, and possible reflux. Pedi suggested MPI or MSPI and suggested I cut out dairy (currently BF). After cutting dairy (8 days now) the diarrhea has gone away but all other symptoms are still present and no better. Pedi is pushing us to start nutramigen and axid since we haven't seen an improvement but said there is no way to test for the MPI. I hate to give up BF and resort to the formula if this is not the issue...so my question is how did you know this was your LO problem? is my Pedi missing something and we can test for it or is it all trial and error? Sorry this is so long I just want to do what is best for my DS. TIA!
Baby is fpies to diary, soy, rice, squash, and sweet potatoes.

Re: How did you know?

  • Starting at 5 weeks my son had loose, green muscuy stools with occassional blood. He also had severe reflux that was related to his MSPI.

Clearing ones system of dairy takes a very long time. Your baby might not be 100% better for weeks. It took my son over 7 weeks after being dairy and soy free to completely be ok.

If you want to keep bfing I would not switch to formula. You will just need to give it more time. There is no real test- besides testing the babies stool for blood- until they are much older and closer to 1 year old.

Make sure you also cut all hidden dairy such as whey and casein. Soy frequently causes intolerances in babies so I would also cut soy just to be sure.

Here is a helpful list of what constitutes dairy:

  • Thanks! They did test for blood and didn't find any but she still seems to think this is the answer. I have cut out all hidden dairy bye bye oreos :( but haven't cut soy yet. I am thinking that is the next step along with starting the reflux meds. I just don't want to change things if he doesn't have it since I am running out of foods to eat and losing a ton of weight that I can't really afford to lose.

oreos are dairy free!!  (But not soy if you are giving that up too). They are one of my DD's special treats!

At first it seems overwhelming, but you'll get used to the diet.  I was able to bf without any special diet, but when my dd switched to solids she had to be 100% dairy free, and initially we had to cut soy too.  If you haven't already check out the mspi mama blog.  She has lots of good recipies to give you some ideas.  Like I said as you do it you'll realize its not super hard and you don't have to buy all special things.  Good luck!

  • With both of my boys they were completely different, yet both had milk allergies (DS1 had much more than that though--as we found out when more food was presented).

So my advice would be for your pedi to test your LO's poop.  They should be able to do it right in the office.  IF you want to go the formula route--like Alimentum--then get samples from the office and try it--after a couple days I think we went and had it tested again--and then a week later.  You should SEE a difference.

I found with DS2 that within a couple of days he was MUCH less cranky and gassy.

Keep in mind though that because you are BFing--they could have any type of allergy--corn, wheat, etc etc.  And for milk--it's important to take out anything that has dairy in it--- there are many keywords to look at that I didn't kow when first starting out.  It's not just the word milk you want to eliminate.

GL to you--I know it's so rough.
