Are you letting your LO choose a lovey or blankey as they get older or are you introducing an object by consistently having it around at fussy times/sleeping times?

We have a stuffed puppy and a soft blanket with a dog head on it that we put with her everywhere. She really doesn't care for them yet, but we figure she will eventually. I specifically bought the puppy to be well made and easy to care for (embroidered eyes and quick drying) because my childhood teddy bear is a wreck with chipped eyes, bare patches and a stretched arm.
I wasn't to do it at all with my 1st DD. Suddenly at 1 year she decided to have a "lovie" and then she was hooked. My 2nd DD did the same exact thing. For some kids I know it is an animal or a lovie and a few kids it is something so strange like a gross burp cloth or a certain blanket.
So I think no matter what you do to stop it it could still happen. If it helps them out, roll with it, and buy extras if you can!!
DS got attached to a penguin pillow pet that my sister in law got him for his 1st birthday. He has since named him Dirty Penguin, because he comes with us EVERYWHERE and has been washed about 3000x... That thing is stained and the fur on it is all matted from being washed so much, but he LOVES this thing!!! Not sure what appealed to him about it. (ANd FYI we have several other ones that we bought- same exact ones- just in case something happens to the original, but he reuses to even TOUCH them!)
We will let her choose. We gave DS a few stuffed animals and none ever caught on. He sleeps with his blanket but it's not really something he takes anywhere with him.

DD never had a lovey.
DS seems to have latched on to a stuffed kitty. I did tend to give it to him in the crib. He loves it and I take it with us places.
