we switched DS over to his crib in his room at 4 weeks. i looked everywhere beforehand for how to do it & they all seemed like too much to go through for a baby so young. when the time came we just stuck to his normal bedtime routine (he eats himself to sleep) like he would be going to bed in his pnp, and put him down in his crib. i don't even think he realized that he was in his own room and not in ours. the switch didn't phase him.
edit: i would do it sooner than later (if he is a decent sleeper) so it won't be a big deal when you do switch over.
Sharing a room reduces the risk of SIDS. The one to four months timeframe is the highest risk for SIDS therefore I'm waiting at least until four months.
Timing is going to be different for everyone so whatever works for your family is what you should do.
With DS he stayed in our room until he was about 7 months old and then he started to sleep more restlessly so we decided to try moving him to his crib to see if that helped, it did and we didn't do anything special to transition him. I think it worked well because it was probably time for him, he wanted more space than what he had in our room.
For DD we're planning to just kind of take it as it comes like we did with DS. We'll explore transitioning her to her own room/crib when the current situation is no longer working for her and/or us.
As far as how, like I said, with DS we just did it and he was fine. I've seen some people recommend to start putting LO down for their naps in the crib to get them used to sleeping there (I assume because if it doesn't work them not sleeping isn't as hard to deal with as overnight!).
Both of my LOs have slept in their cribs/rooms since around the first week or so. It was a little longer with my DS because I had a c-section and couldn't get in and out of our bed, so I slept on our couch with him in the PnP.
I think that whenever you feel ready to transition your DS is the right time! There are people who have their LOs in their rooms from day 1 and some who keep them in their rooms for months. It's all about what works for you and your baby.
If you are ready to get him in his room, maybe start with naps and go from there. On the other hand, he is so young that you could probably just do it one night and see how it goes! It's a great time to start a night time routine if you want to. (i.e. bath time, story time, whatever.)
We started putting LO in her crib after her bath/bedtime routine when she was about 6 weeks old. She would usually sleep in it for a few hours (or about half the night), and then either slept next to me in bed or in her cradle in our room until morning. Then, between 9 and 10 weeks she started sleeping through the night so she just stayed in the crib (this was the week we started daycare so she was exhausted from crying all day every day).
The past week she's been getting up around 1am to eat, and I just get up and rock her while she eats, and put her back in the crib. She's usually out in 10-15 minutes, so it isn't a huge deal anymore. We used to bring her to bed with us so I could nurse in side-lying because it took her longer to get through a feed.
I don't know if you swaddle, but I think it definitely helps her to feel more secure in such a wide open space like the crib.
DD isn't old enough yet, but with DS we moved him from the bassinet in our room to his crib when he was about 6 months - too big for the bassinet anymore...And we started by putting him in there for naps and then eventually at bedtime.
