Hello.
Our now 7-month old daughter was diagnosed with a milk-protien allergy at about 3-1/2 months, this was from a GI specialist we saw at Boston Childrens hospital. he also told us to stay away from soyand gluten as he could not pin point but slowly eliminated each of those from her diet until she was not have blood in her stool and awful tummy aches. Which we have been doing since that point.
At her 6-month pedi appointment her pedi said to start introducing all foods, I asked including dairy? She said yes. So we tried some cheese, she was screaming with gas pains, screams and body flails I have not seen from her in months, I felt so bad. We also tried some pasta with spinach and ricotta, same result.
Well I picked up some Stonyfield organic yogart at the super market this weekend and wanted to try a little to see... but after instructing my Husband to give her that at oatmeal from breakfast, I texted him at my first red light on the ride to work and said don't.
I am nervous that it will make her sick and don't want to cause her any discomfort.
Has anyone delt with a milk-protien allergy in their infants that has evolved by the age my daughter is (7-months) and been able to intoduce solid milk-product foods?? What kind of results did you get? How did you experiment to know if they were or were no longer having an issue? Was there different reactions from different foods or...
FTM here, so I am extremely cautious and maybe a little overly worried.
Re: 7-months milk protien allergy
First off I think I sounds more like your DD was diagnosed with an intolerance vs an actual allergy based on what you are saying and her symptoms. That might be why your pedi said its ok to try Yogurt. But still, I'd double check with the GI doctor since they are the one who told you to cut out milk in the first place. A true milk protein allergy would present itself as hives after eating dairy, and usually dairy in breast milk is tolerated ok. Versus an intolerance in which young babies cannot digest milk well even in breast milk but do not have any hives or anaphylactic response to dairy ingestion. Sometimes babies can have both, though, so you should still follow up with the GI doc and possibly an allergist to know exactly how to manage it.
All that being said, I feel like if your DD is uncomfortable or sick after eating yogurt, then why bother? There are tons of foods she can eat to make up for what she'll miss in dairy and my DD is proof that kids can thrive without it. Hopefully she'll outgrow it soon.
Thank you for the feedback.
I trust the pedi and that was why we tried a few differnt foods. We never did the yogurt this week, my guy feeling just said don't.
We don't have to go back to her pedi GI at Childrens until her 1-year testing. Her last visit there was in November so she was just about 5-months and he told us we could start solids and to read labels and call him if anything came up.
He used the language allergy, not intolerance. I did read online that allergies cannot be tested until at least one year of age, but figured he knew what he was talking about.
Thanks again everyone.
We have been going to the office in Waltham. So far they have helped up. But they did not mention any other testing at one year, but did tell us to come back at one year. Maybe that was what they wanted, I figured it was just to see how she is. Her regular pedi send test results from dirty diapers we bring to them to the pedi GI at Children's saves us the co-pay and the drive.
