How Would You Spell It?

I like the name Mah-duh-LINE (Li- like lion) but I don't know how you would spell it because of Mah-duh-lynns spelling it Madeline (I know many of these, if you don't, just an FYI). To me, that shoule be spelled Madelyn/Madelynn. I'm leaning towards Madeleine to get the pronunciation I want. Would you get my pronunciation for Madeleine or Madeline better? Or a different spelling?

And leave middle names, please! Just no Roses or Lilys, because the Madelines (Ma-duh-lynn) I know have those middle names. (The Rose one makes me upset, it has a connection.)

Re: How Would You Spell It?

  • I think spelling it Madeline is your best bet.  Be prepared to do a lot of name correcting.

  • To me Madeline is how you say it, but I agree many others have ruined it by spelling their Mad-e-lyn the same as Madeline making it a confusing name!

I don't think there is much you can do and I think most default to saying it how you want until they are told its 'lyn' so you should be safe!!

  • I like the visual look of Madeleine, but I don't understand how you'd get 'Lynn' from the 'lein'. It may just be me..

  • If I am not mistaken, Madelyn is the Americanized version of the French Madeleine, and they are both pronounced -lynn

For the pronounciation you want, spell it line

    Madeline Renee

    Madeline Amelia

    Madeline Olivia

    Madeline Emily

    Madeline Christine

    Madeline June

    Madeline Kaye

  • Would I be considered 'youneek' for using Madeleine with the -LINE I want? I looked at BTN and it was listed as a pronunciation, and some commenters said they know people/have daughters with it, and some said it should be spelled Madeline. I just think Madeleine looks much better.

I don't think anyone will call you out on it, if that is what you are worried about.

  • I would spell it Madeline. I have a Madilyn and choose that spelling to get the "lyn". There are some people that will get Madeline wrong, but I think that will happen with and version of the spelling, so I would use "line" for line.

  • DD is Madeleine and everyone pronounces it -Lynn.  If you want the -line pronunciation I would use the Madeline spelling.  Yes, people may still pronounce it -Lynn, but you're more likely people will get it correct and this is the only spelling that makes sense for that pronunciation.

My opinion is in the minority here, but I would spell it Madeleine (I also prefer this spelling) and pronounce it the 'line' way. It is a legitimate pronunciation of the name spelled this way.  It sounds as though you may be correcting people either way, so you might as well spell it how you like. good luck!

  • I would stick with the traditional spelling unless you have your heart stuck on the other. I think it is your best chance for the pronunciation you want.

This. My friend's DD is Madeline (mad-uh-line) but people call her mad-uh-lynn a lot.

  • I would go with Madeline, too. I adore it.
