Babies: 0 - 3 Months

11 week old and sleep

I'm really just looking for words of encouragement and support.

My 11 week old EBF DS is still waking up every two hours at night. We are co-sleeping because otherwise I would be walking dead but I just need to hear that this is normal and it will pass! DS1 was an awesome sleeper that self-soothed starting at 5 weeks and STTN at 6 weeks, he was also EFF.

I just want to know that someday he will sleep in a crib for more than two hours at a time and that I will be able to sleep with DH again. I feel like my cut off for sleeping together is four months but we will see when we get there.

Re: 11 week old and sleep

  • My LO was a terrific sleeper starting very early. We did go through a spurt where she was back up every 3 hrs to eat but went right back down.  Then, magically overnight she started STTN completely.  It'll happen.  Every LO is different but you'll get there :)

  • I'm sorry about the timing of my post above yours... I was in this place with my first son, ironically. Really never slept long stretches at night and would never nap longer than 45 minutes. He really started organizing his sleep, though, at 3.5-4 months. Everything just kind of happened on it's own - longer naps, longer stretches at night (though he still woke up 1 -2 times at night to nurse for a long time). It'll get better...
  • I'm in a similar situation, and it was the same with my DD. What is getting me through right now is constantly telling myself that it will get better around the four month mark. That's when it got better with DD.

Thank you! I keep telling myself the same but have no prior experience to back it up haha, so this gives me hope :)

  • I really enjoy sleeping with my little! I never knew that we would end up bedsharing but its totally working for us. I know that eventually she'll be in the crib so I'm just going to enjoy the snuggles and not having to leave the bed at night!

  • I think every baby turns a corner at their own time re sleeping longer stretches at night.  My little one is also 11 weeks today & EBF and there are times when he'll go 5 hours at a stretch but other nights he'll wake up every 3 hours on the dot.  As exhausting as it is I think it's important to remind ourselves that it will get better.  I was really tempted to try formula before bedtime but haven't done it because it's hard enough to get baby boy to take breastmilk from a bottle & don't want to create a negative experience before bedtime.

One thing you can try, which helped immensely for me, was to space out feedings during the day to force baby to go 3 hours between day time feedings at my pediatrician's recommendation.  When I did that, baby started spacing out nighttime feedings better.  Think he was trained to take more milk at a feeding and feeling satiated for longer periods.  May not work with your little one since all babies are different, but might be worth a shot.
