Cloth Diapering

Oh Katy's...

We only have two of these, and they were the first pockets to fit LO.  I read some mixed review online but we never had any leak problems so I thought we were going to be one of the lucky ones.  And now they're leaking almost every time we use them... I'm frustrated because I really like them!  Anyone else experience leaking problems with them?  Any idea of why so many people have leaking issues?

  • Have you tried adding more absorbency?

  • I would be one of those mixed reviewers. We have issues getting pockets to fit (skinny baby) and Oh Katy's have worked best for us, of all the pockets we have tried. We have 6 of them in our stash. I like the way the snaps are laid out, and the way the pocket flap is designed in the front means less likelihood that MF will accidentally be in contact with DS's skin. That said, I've noticed they need a little fine tuning now and then.

When we have had leaks it has been primarily because DS was a bit too skinny to fill out the diapers. I think it also took a few more washes than I expected for the inserts to be fully prepped and absorbent. On a rare occasion he has saturated the inserts, and then pee has wicked onto the outer fibers of the PUL. We've never had it leak straight through the PUL, though.

I originally thought we would use pockets as an ON diaper, but he tends to leak when lying down. They work best when DS is riding in the Ergo. Seems to put the right amount of pressure on the various layers to force the pee into the inserts.

I have been using the MF inserts that came with the diapers, using both the small and large. Right now I am tweaking the absorbency by layering a hemp doubler with the large MF. Just to see if they work better.

I think for us this is just the nature of pocket diapers, they need periodic adjustment as LO grows.

We also have a BG 4.0, a FB Elite, and 2 Thirsties Duo pockets. They all have their issues. Pockets come in handy sometimes, but we have found prefolds, fitteds and AIOs to be more reliable. Put another way, maybe they have a greater possibility of user error than other types of diapers. YMMV.

  • I loved my Oh Katys, but sadly my tall girl has now outgrown them. Though, I don't use MF inserts. I happily used them for 13 months. The only time they ever leaked for me was when I tried a joey bunz h/c jersey insert on its own and A peed too fast for it to absorb everything.

I just wanted to point out that MF inserts only need one wash before first use. The absorbancy does not increase with more washes.

I realize that is the conventional wisdom, I'm just saying what my experience was with these diapers. They just seemed to get more absorbent after a few washes.
