Does anyone else have a nosy eater when fed from a bottle? Sometimes you can hear him gulping and it's so disconcerting. We hold the bottle level so that the flow is slower, he's on a 0 month nipple. He doesn't appear to be in any distress but sometimes he has that junky sounding breathing that just sounds like he's about to choke. Other times it's like he forgets to breathe. He has his 1 month pedi appt Tuesday and I'll ask then, but does this happen to anyone else? I stopped pumping bc I just wasn't making enough I was only getting 2-3oz per day and now he's EFF. He didn't eat so noisily or dribble this much when given a BM bottle.

DS is also a noisy eater. I BF and he gets a pumped bottle before bed. He is noisier with the bottle than at the breast, but makes noise with both. He is actually so noisy that when I am on the phone everyone knows he is eating. I to feel that he sounds junky. I said something to the pedi at the last visit, but he was not concerned about it. I would love to hear if your pedi gives you any advise.

DD is an extremely noisy eater. I breastfeed and bottle feed pumped milk and she's always gulping and slurping like it's her last meal. Sometimes she starts to choke and cough a bit. The only real problem it has caused is gas. (We use gripe water to combat it.)
I was initially concerned but our pediatrician said not to worry and that an enthusiastic / impatient eater means a very healthy baby.

My LC recommended switching bottles, well it was more about the nipples, due to the gulping and choking. She said nipple hole sizes aren't regulated across brands, so they're all different, and most flow pretty quickly, even if they're "0 month" nipples. Medela nipples are especially bad.
Anyway, we're using Dr. Brown's bottles with their preemie nipples. The LC said they're the slowest flow she's found. She also said we could use the preemie nipples all the way until sippy cups because, if you think about it, natural nipple hole size never changes. The baby sucks more and gets more faster. The bottle has extra parts that are annoying to clean, but DD is a much happier eater.
Oh, and I don't produce enough BM, so DD gets about 40 percent formula, and those bottles always seem to flow faster, and used to cause more choking than the BM bottles.

Where did you get the Dr Brown's premie nipples? I didn't see them at BBB. I was thinking of getting some to see if they slowed him down and caused less choking.

I actually did get them at BBB, but the huge BBB in our city. They weren't at the small BBB. I just recently saw them at BRU too, and I know they didn't have them in December. There's also a baby boutique near us that carries them, so maybe you could try one near you?

I just looked at the Dr. Brown's website and they only have the preemie nipples for the standard bottles and we use the wide-necks. DH doesn't think it's necessary, but I'm going to ask the pedi and see what she thinks.
