Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Please help!

Here it goes! I am a FTM of a beautiful baby girl who will be 12 weeks old on Sunday. We had it a little hard at the beginning due to BF and then switched to FF since LO was loosing too much weight....then she was very fussy and very colicky. Then it got much much better when we finally ended up giving her similac Alimentum about 1 month ago. We went from a crying all the time baby to a very happy baby. She's been really good at sleeping all night, from 10pm to 6am but was always a not so good napper during the day. Since Sunday, she has woken up once very night for an extra feeding.....I am thinking maybe a growt spur. However, its been two days that he is having a harder time burping and today, she cried as soon as I removed the bottle from her mouth to make her burp....an wouldn't burp. So I stood up and a huge burp came out of her and she cried. Once I tried to give her back the bottle, she wouldn't eat anymore and was very very fussy. Took my husband and I a very long time to make her sleep a little. It's almost like her burp hurt her so bad that she didn't want to eat anymore. Any advice on what might be the issue???!!! Sorry for the long post! It's just like when it's starting to be easier, there's always something that comes up...,I'm jut hoping it gets any easier. I hate to see her in pain.

Re: Please help!

  • Is it possible LO has reflux? My DD doesn't have it, but I have read a little about it. I know there are a few moms on here that have LO's with reflux.

  • I would try having your baby eat some and then stop and burp maybe a couple of times in between finishing the bottle. It might help relieve some of the gas and then she might take the bottle right after each burp. Tummy time helps with some of the gas as well. If that doesn't work maybe its what other people are saying about the reflux which I never had to deal with so I have no advice for that problem.

  • Usually babies don't sleep through the night consistently at this age, so it's pretty normal that she would be getting up once a night to eat. And with the burp, I would keep an eye on her not burping for a few more days, they sometimes won't burp after every feeding. She could have cried because it startled her, and she may not have wanted to eat more. A lot of the times when they can't get an air bubble out they keep eating and eating to try and fix it, when it really just takes some firm back patting to get them out. You can usually tell their are eating to try and fix a tummy issue if they get on and off the bottle repeatedly in a sitting and are fussy while eating. It will get easier, but this young age can be hard because they can't tell you with words whats wrong. Hope any of this helps!

  • The same thing happened with my LO im also a FTM and went through that too. Keep an eye on her spitting up and arching her back after a feeding when she sits up. Sounds like reflux to me also. My ped told me to start mixing cereal in bottles two teaspoons..brand new baby overnight and he wakes up every once in a while to feed at night but most of the time sleeps!
  • Definitely sounds like reflux. In my experience, when we switched over to FF, my son started with the extreme gas (big burps/general discomfort), arching his back, and getting very fussy during/between feedings. Have you tried giving gas drops? That may be a good starting point. Since you already have your LO on Alimentum, I'd maybe talk to your pedi about possibly exploring other options for gas/reflux.

  • Thank you everyone. She went back through sleeping all night and has been less fussy. Will talk to my pedi about reflux. As a new mom, it has been pretty hard since everything is so new and it seems that all other babies around us just sleep, poop and eat. Other moms in my surroundings havent gone through colics, etc...
