Fenugreek and Hyperthyroidism

Hi everyone,

I had some milk supply issues right after my daughter was born even though I had my TSH levels tested and they were normal. My lactation consultant suggested that I take Motherlove More Milk Plus. I have been taking it for 3 months now and it works great. I had my thyroid retested and my TSH level dropped to way below normal (hyperthyroidism) and my T4 level was also high all of a sudden. I have never had thyroid issues in the past so I am wondering if anyone has had a similar issue happen when taking fenugreek. I have googled this and seen some discussions about hypothyroidism, but was curious if this was also true with hyperthyroidism.

Thanks so much!

Re: Fenugreek and Hyperthyroidism

  • It doesn't cause a thyroid problem, but I did read a warning only if you already have a thyroid issue. It's more likely that having a baby is the reason your thyroid is out of whack.

I don't know about hyper but I have hypo and remember reading somewhere (?) that you shouldn't take fenugreek. But, I read that after I'd been taking it for a month without problems. I feel like almost every medication says not to take it if you have thyroid disease but that only refers to people that aren't treating it.

Side note - The best luck I had with increasing my supply though was to pump immediately after nursing DS (like within 5 minutes). I did this for maybe 3 or 4 days and noticed an increase that stuck around. It's a lot of work though:)
