Those who have or are getting Mirena

Are you planning to have more kids and when are you going to start TTC again?  I was looking into Mirena, but I know we're likely going to start TTC by this time next year.  I'm not sure if it's worth getting this, since I'd have it removed in a year or would I be better sticking to BCP.  I plan to ask my doctor next week, I'm just looking for what others have been told.  Thanks!

Re: Those who have or are getting Mirena

  • I plan to start TTC about 2 years after I had it put in, so to me it was worth it.  For only a year, I could see arguments either way.  I would definitely be sure your insurance pays for it-- it was $1000 to have it inserted.  My insurance covered it 100% so it wasn't a dime out of my pocket, but if you're paying for it that would definitely factor in.

  • it depends on what it's going to cost you out of pocket.  we don't plan on having more, so the 5 year thing is for us.  however, you need to weigh the cost of that vs. what you would be paying out of pocket for BC pills to see which is more sound to you.  My doc said unless you were going to use it for an extended period it wasn't worth it.

however, if you are scared of the mini pills effectiveness (i used it with condoms) then maybe it's worth it for more peace of mind.

  • We plan to start TTC when DS is 3. My doc said I can come back to have it taken out at anytime.
  • i don't know yet if it will be safe for me to get pregnant again (for me or the baby), so i'm going to be discussing that with my dr. at my appt. on friday when he puts the mirena in.  if it is, we wouldn't want our kids close together, so it is a perfect choice for me.
  • We aren't having anymore kids. In between our kids though I didn't really use birth control (other than pull and pray) because I didn't really care if I got pg or not.
  • We are not planning on having another baby until DD is 3 so it was a good choice for us. Dr. said we can get it out anytime though so if we decide to try sooner she will take it out.

If it will only be for a year it might not be worth it. You can have up to 6 months of spotting with it. I've had mine for two months and I've had on and off spotting since then.
