Reflux and feeding

My little Zoey is 7 weeks old and was recently diagnosed with reflux and is taking zantac.  She has seemed more comfortable....but still fussy and SOOO hungry.  I'm afraid I might be feeding her too much.  She takes 4-5 oz. every 3 hours.  She weighs around 11.5  pounds....has never had a weight problem, like some babies with reflux.  Anyone else experience this??

Re: Reflux and feeding

  • Our pedi just prescribed Zantac for DD2 today, and she has never had a weight gain problem either. The big factor for us was how badly it was disrupting her sleeping, that seemed big to our pedi for deciding to medicate. I also think with silent relux babies eat a lot to soothe the pain of reflux or something, so maybe our girls do that thus no weight gain issue?

  • I have heard that about reflux babies...so you're prob right.  We have issues with sleeping too.  She's finally sleeping better...but I have to hold her all night.  Is your bay sleeping better?

  • We just got it today so we will see if it helps her sleep. I hope so. I hold her upright for a while after feeding and then she will lay and sleep alone in her inclined crib, but wakes due to spit up, or I hear her cough, choke, etc from spit up and run in there, so hopefully it will make for calmer nights.

  • It took a few days...but the Rx completely took away the choking and gagging for Zoey.  Hope it works for your LO!!

  • My chunk weighs 12 lbs at 8 weeks. He is on Prevacid, but we also have to add rice cereal to his bottles to help keep the formula down. You may see her eating slow down once the meds kick in and she doesn't need the sucking to soothe the burning sensation.

  • The Zantac did nothing for DD. Apparently docs have to try that before most insurances will cover Prevacid or Prilosec.

However, I asked around and several friends suggested a chiropractor. I'm still looking into it, but that sounds better to me than more meds. I'm hoping something works soon bc it took 1.5 hours to feed her tonight and in that time she vomited at least 8 times.
