Babies: 0 - 3 Months

tell me about the formula you use

My milk supply is tanking. I'll be supplementing with formula, hopefully very little, shortly. I supplemented with DS and used Similac Advanced then moved to Similac Sensitive For Spit Up because of his acid reflux and projectile vomiting. (It was awesome!)

This time around, I'd like to save some money but still give LO a quality formula. I have heard that off-brands like Up & Up have the same components as the more expensive, well known brands of formula, though they are essentially the same.

What do you use? How much do you spend? (whether you're supplementing or baby is exclusively FF)

TIA

Re: tell me about the formula you use

  • Generics are nutritionally comparable to name brands.  But just as Enfamil and Similac will have different fillers (all safe) so will generics.  That means not every baby can eat every formula but it's trial and error with EVERY formula, kwim?  We used Up&Up and had no issues.  My son was never a huge eater and even at his highest, a big $20 tub lasted over a week.

  • We use Gerber Good Start Gentle and spend about 24 dollars a week on a large can, sometimes a little more if he eats more then usual that week.

  • According to my pediatrician, they are all interchangeable.  We are supplementing and so far getting by on the freebies he gave us, but LO has had Similac and Enfamil without any problems.

  • We use the sam's club brand formula. I think it says it is comparable to enfamil.

  • I am in the same boat as far as my supply and have to supplement after every feeding. We use enfamil gentlease. Its runs $24 - $26 for the container. Not sure about other brands. My pediatrician suggested we dont switch to another brand just yet since we switched from regular enfamil last week. I'm currently looking for organic brands.
  • We started on Enfamil Newborn, switched to Enfamil Gentlease (for tummy trouble) and just recently switched to Earth's Best Organic- which is awesome.  Yes, a little more on the pricey side, but worth it.

Just an FYI we switched from Enfamil Gentlease to Earth's Best because the first ingredient in Gentlease is corn syrup.  Yuck :(
