Explosive baby puke

Hi ladies,

DD2 5 weeks old has ended up having tons of feeding problems and isn't gaining weight well. She was born with a mild cleft palate and has tons of gas issues because she gets so much extra air when she eats.

She's on gentleease formula and we mix gas drops in with every bottle. We feed her pretty upright, burp 3 times or so for feedings and take breaks.

She continues to have episodes of projectile spit up puke anywhere from 1 to 3 times per day. It literally seems like its an entire bottles worth when it happens and it soaks everything around us.

I've talked to the pedi about it before and he kind of shrugged it off as being related to her stomach muscles being under developed.

I have to take her for a weight check tomorrow and I'm going to bring it up again, but I was wondering if any of you had any experience with this.

Any advice?

  • That's how Layla was diagnosed with reflux.  She didn't have trouble sleeping or any of the colicky symptoms, but she spit up. a.lot. and it seemed like she was constantly spitting up the entirety of what she had just eaten.  at about 1 month old they finally brought her in for an x-ray test to confirm the reflux and make sure it wasn't pyloric stenosis.  She was on meds for awhile but they made her act terribly uncomfortable and didn't take care of the spit-up problem so we took her off them.  We didn't end up doing anything for that, but her gas problems were just as bad.  We paired gas drops and gripe water (Mommy's Bliss) with a heating pack on her belly when she was in unbearable pain (writhing, it was really sad to watch)... then we found BioGaia.  I swear by it.  It's a probiotic drop, and it nearly 100% cured her gas issues.  5 drops once a day and she had no gas issues at all. it's about $25-30 for a 1 month supply at walgreens, but I asked my local pharmacy to pick it up, and i would purchase it on 10% off tuesdays.

Good Luck with the doctors, keep badgering them until they run some tests. It may be underdeveloped organs, or it may be a bigger issue. I'd make it clear you're not settling for being shrugged off.
