Monkey Butt

So...you know how when you go to the zoo, you see monkeys picking at each others butts?  And these monkeys always have a red as*....well....

DD's butt is starting to look like one of those red monkey butts.   I've tried oatmeal baths, triple paste/wash, and we put diaper rash cream on after every diaper change.  I let her sit naked for an hour tonight, but it's still really red in her butt.

It doesn't seem to bother her a bit, but I felt like a crappy mom when our daycare provider pointed it out again today.  Any tips that I haven't thought of yet to relieve some of the redness?

FYI...it's not a blotchy diaper rash.  This just looks like red, irritated skin.

Re: Monkey Butt

  • Do you know whats causing the rash? Can you try a different brand of diapers?

  • We are going through the same thing right now. Doctor told us lots of nakey time, use Butt Paste or Balmex. Use only wash clothes no wipes. Good luck! Hope her little bum gets better soon!

  • It's probably a yeast rash. Try some fungal cream, clotrimazole. It should clear right up. If regular diaper rash cream isn't working and it's bumpy it's usually yeast rash.

  • D's gets like that sometimes. When it does we use butt paste. I also started putting butt paste on at night after his bath. It helps.

  • There's a cream for diaper rash actually called Anti-Monkey Butt that's where I thought this thread was going.

  • If its a yeast rash try baking soda in her bath. Let her soak in it for 15mins. Only use a dry wash cloth to wipe with for wet diapers and a wetwater only wash cloth for poopy diapers. No baby wipes, that will make it worse. Also try putting Lotrimine on it 3 times a day. This is what our pedi told us to do when DS has a yeast rash from his antibotics.

  • Have you tried Aquaphor? It works great for us! Also, when using diaper cream, don't wipe/rub it off when changing wet diapers. Just blot a bit and put on more cream. If you wipe it off, it can irritate the skin more.
  • Thanks ladies for the tips.  I didn't know there actually was a cream called anti-monkey butt.  Funny!

We spent a lot of "naked" time last night and it helped a little...but we have a ways to go.  I think I'm going to stop and get some new ointment tonight.  We had been using Desitin but obviously it isn't doing the trick.

  • I second the baking soda in a bath, but the best thing you can do is to keep airing her out as much as possible.  Make sure she is completely aired out (you can use a hair dryer on cool if you are in a hurry) before putting a new diaper on.  I would look into a prescription diaper cream for yeast infections.

  • Poor little baby bum!  Desitin did not work well for us, and it is hard to wipe off so I think that irritates the skin more.  When DS gets a bad diaper rash we use Viva paper towels (really, really soft) with warm water, dry his butt with a clean cloth diaper, blow on it a bit and then re-apply Butt Paste - the one in the red tube.  It works great.  We put Butt Paste on him every night before bed to protect his bum during the long stretch of sleep.

Good luck, I hope it clears up soon!
