Thrush?

My nipples hurt and ache when baby is not nursing. It hurts when I bump against something and sometimes the feel of my shirt rubbing on my nipples hurts. LO is 6 weeks and this pain just started, maybe 3 nights ago so something's different. Maybe LO's growth spurt and need to feed more often...

Anyway, when nursing, I don't feel any pain other than the initial mild latch on pain. I don't see any white patches in LO mouth. My nipples, between the areola and the nipple is pink/red, slightly swollen. Finally baby makes a "clicking" sound while nursing. I read that can happen when his mouth is sore...but he's not crying (more than usual). So the pain and tenderness and the clicking? How did you know you had thrush??

Re: Thrush?

  • I thought I did, got the medicine and used it for like 2 weeks but when I actually went to the doctor she said I don't have thrush! I just have lots of problems with her latch [poor latch can make a clicking sound too] which is making my nipples raw.

  • I had thrush.  Other than nipple pain, my boobs was getting these extreme shooting pain.   It was horrible.  My lactation specialist told me to continue to bf (but, stop pumping) if I can handle the pain and use up all the refrigerated/freezed breast milk that was pumped the week before.  Since I caught it early enough and with topical treatment cream, it was better in less than two weeks.

I hope you don't have thrush.

  • I'm in a similar confused situation. My baby, Mia, has been fussier lately especially when nursing. She latches on okay, has a stretch of drinking, then pops off and is hysterical. Sometimes there is a little milk in her mouth and sometimes there is not. She half heartedly attempts to re-latch but doesn't really even close her mouth around the nipple again. I've wondered if I have too fast of a milk flow, too slow of a flow since the upset occurs after let down, if Mia has reflux (she hardly ever has spit up though and only burps occasionally despite vigorous attempts on my part), or an allergy to something I am eating- did I leave anything out? :)

In addition, she has had a very red area on her bum that has not improved with diaper rash cream in about a week and a half. She had diaper rash in the past which responded positively to cream. Also, my nipples have been very itchy and painful after nursing. I get some sharp pains in my breasts as well.

I called the pediatrician and she called in a script for cream nystatin for the rash (which has shown signs of improvement) but she wouldn't give nystatin for the mouth unless Mia had white spots (which she doesn't, except milk tongue). I had my OBGYN give me a script for diflucan but I don't want to take it now unless I know for sure that MIa has thrush and is receiving oral nystatin. My concern is that if she does have it she will just reinfect me after I take the medication and if she doesn't then I am treating myself for something I don't have...

Geesh! I wrote a long response. I guess I am looking for answers just like you!  Good luck!
