s/o family locker rooms

Our YMCA has men's locker rooms, women's locker rooms, boys locker rooms, girls locker rooms, and a family locker room.  I took the kids into the family locker room the other day, and there were a lot of parents of both genders in there with their kids.

Now, I didn't have to change my kids that day, but I don't think I would be comfortable stripping my kids down in front of strange men.  Don't know why.  I have no problem doing it in the women's locker room.

Is this just my thing?  Or would other people be kind of weirded out by it?

I want to add that my kids would have to be kind of old (maybe 5 or even 6) before I would send them into the boys locker room to change into a swimsuit on their own. Adults aren't allowed in kids locker rooms, and kids aren't allowed in adult locker rooms.  So, this isn't just 2 year olds.

(I didn't investigate fully, it may be that there are individual changing rooms)

Re: s/o family locker rooms

  • Wait...are the men and the women also changing in front of each other? I'd be more weirded out by that than my kids + man. (And for the record, my oldest is 5 and there's NO WAY IN HELL he would be going into the men's room to change by himself right now.)

  • Yeah, that would bother me too. I'd just get them to change inside a private stall, you know? They must have those in a family change room... right??

  • sounds like you go to my YMCA...

the family locker room has very large stalls with locking doors and large bathrooms. womens locker room has no stalls and small bathrooms.

  • Are you suggesting there be separate dad family changing rooms and mom family changing rooms? That they just allow children of all ages in the men's and women's changing rooms? Because otherwise what are they supposed to do when a father takes his kids to the Y?

But then, I wouldn't change in a changing room without a stall with or without my children because I don't change in front of strangers at all.

  • We dont' have a Y, but our swimming pool has mens, ladies & family change rooms.  We always use the family room and probably will for quite some time.  There are individual stalls and large bathrooms to change in so nobody is getting naked in front of strangers.  I wouldn't be comfortable with no stalls at all!  That would be odd.  But the thought of kids change rooms kind of weirds me out too.  It would be a long time before I would let my kids go into a change room alone.

  • Idno I see where your coming from but if a man was in that locker room its because he had children of his own to change right??
I don't think it would really bother me. I would be bothered if he was changing in front of me tho! Lol
  • Our Y has family locker rooms, but they are individual rooms with their own shower stall, changing tables, sink and toilets.

  • We go into the family stalls a lot when it's me, DH and both kids. There are individual changing rooms in that area. It's nbd. Theres never been a naked man in the middle of the locker area.

I'd be more concerned by my kid seeing random adult strangers naked then by men seeing my kid naked.

I'm really confused.  Is this just one giant room with naked everyone everywhere?  Because I'm not changing in front of random men I don't know.  That's really odd.

No.  It was kind of weird.  There were a lot of adults still dressed in coats with a few naked kids running around.   I realized later that when DH took them to our old gym, there were probably naked men in the room, and it doesn't bother me at all.  I think it just weirded me out to see men in the locker room.  It hardly seemed different than changing my kids in the lobby.

It makes sense that there are stalls.  Maybe they were just all occupied at that time.

Penguingirl, every other gym I have belonged to had a few private family changing rooms and allowed young children to be brought into the adult locker rooms.  It just seemed odd to have one gigantic changing room for everyone with young kids.

I can see that.  My oldest is 4, and I feel like in another year, I could send him into the boys locker room (18 and under) during the school day while it was pretty empty and I was waiting outside.

Then again, I have no idea.   I may feel completely different in another year.
