My glucose test results were borderline. The midwife said instead of doing the 3 hour re-check she would just have me follow the diabetic diet. I have been doing so good since then, but today I gave in to the chocolate craving and ate what feels like 35,000 snickers mini's. Im feeling pretty guilty about it now, since im not sure what that may do to the baby. Mother of the year over here...
Re: Snickers are on the GD diet, right?
Try not to beat yourself up about it or feel guilty. You can't expect to be super perfect and a very occassional treat is ok. Just maybe try for one or two snickers mini's next time
The best thing you can do is go for a 30 min walk or do some exercise for at least 30 min. That will help your body process the sugar. It'll be ok. Your LO will be ok. It's the consistent large amounts of sugars that are concerning.
I email my sugars to my doc every week, and I usually have about 3 high numbers within that week. She said the occasional high number isn't bad. She just doesn't want to see a whole day of high numbers for several days in a row. It's hard to tell a pregnant lady she can't EVER have something she's craving. You just have to eat a lot less of it than you might want to
Here's my confession: I ate a large slice of red velvet cake and felt really guilty about it too. And now I want snickers...

She should have given you some guidelines to go by. Are you having to check blood sugars throughout the day? If you can see what your numbers are like, that helps a lot in determining what you can and can't eat. I would definitely ask her to help create a meal plan for you.
Mine is that I am allowed 45-60 grams of carbs for breakfast, and 60 grams for lunch and dinner. 15-30 grams for snacks. By checking my numbers, I figured out that no matter what kind of cereal it is, I can't have it for breakfast. My body just doesn't process cereal carbs well and leaves me with a really high number. But I can eat oatmeal with a glass of milk for breakfast or a sausage, egg, and cheese english muffin with a glass of milk but only if I take half the muffin off. For dinner, I have to make sure to measure out any noodles to a cup or less to make sure I don't eat too many carbs. It was pretty darn hard at the beginning but once I got it figured out, it's easier to work around the carbs.
You should definitely check out the high-risk pregnancy board. There's a lot of ladies there with GD that can help you with any questions. I wasn't officially diagnosed with it since I technically passed my 3-hour but we are treating me as if I was. My doc was pretty sure I'd develop it at some point so we tried to get a handle on it early. I had my glucose testing done early due to IR PCOS. Ended up starting my GD diet at 18 weeks

You should ask for a referral to see a nutritionist because you may get a one-on-one session. You also need to ask her for clarification as to what "low carb" means. I mean, I still eat a bunch of carbs, but they are just spread out over the day and I always eat them with protein.
Also, I find that if you give in to your cravings a little here and there, you may be less likely to go nuts. I have chips here and there. If I didn't, I'd eat the whole bag in one sitting!
