Help! Breast to bottle transition

I'm trying to introduce my baby girl to bottles of breast milk to get her used to them before I head back to work. She does great for the first ounce and then gets upset mad, frustrated,?. Then we get spit ups, coughing, etc. I'm trying just one bottle a day of 3 oz that's about what she eats per feeding. I use avent bottles and slowest flow nipples. Any suggestions??

Re: Help! Breast to bottle transition

  • Maybe she would do better with a different nipple.... Every brand's slow flow is different. I've also seen some recommendations for the Dr. Brown's preemie nipple. If she's spitting up she may be eating too quickly. Kellymom.com has a great page about the proper way to bottle feed a breastfed baby... Check that out!

  • I was having trouble with bottles too. I ended up using the medela calma nipple. It's supposed to simulate the breast and the flow is dependent on their sucking strength. It works with my glass evenflo bottles, I don't know about other brands. It took about a week of trying bottles to get her used to how to eat from them though, so maybe just keep trying or give her a burp break after the ounce she takes well.

  • Good to know.  I'm returning to work in a few weeks and really need to start making the transition soon.  I hope my LO will transition smoothly...

  • I use the playtex bottle with drop ins and slow flow nipple and my LO seems to do good with those

  • We use the tommee tippee bottles with the slow nipple. It took lo a few feedings to get used to how much more comes out of that than the breast. He eventually got used to it. Try a few more times and stop to burp every half ounce to ounce if you have to.

  • Didn't read other comments but I wanted to offer my thoughts...

Medela calma nipple and have someone else feed the bottle. You might have to leave! DD won't do the bottle if I'm in her range of sight, sound, or smell!! GL!

  • Thanks all the problem was me! She takes the bottle from everyone but me, which is fine bc I plan to nurse her when I can after and before work.
