Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Feeding Schedule?

So the past lets say 2 months I have been feeding LO at two hours then a few weeks ago I bumped it up to three hours if he wanted to go that long. Should I just be at the point now where whenever he wants to eat, he can eat? Whether its 2 hours or 4 hours? The reason Ive kept up with increased feedings during the day is so he sleeps longer at night. Does there come a point where it doesnt matter how many feedings vs nighttime sleep? Just curious as to other babys feeding schedules.

Re: Feeding Schedule?

  • We've been letting LO eat when she wants from the start.  Of course, we monitor to make sure she's eating enough, but she's been fairly consistent--eating every 3 hrs (except at night).

  • We are working on getting our little guy to sleep through the night (he is still getting up for one MOTN feeding), and our pedi suggested more frequents feedings during the day to make sure he is getting all the calories he needs.

  • I feed him whenever he wants to eat. I feel like they are too young for a schedule, because as soon as you set one, they have a growth spurt and everything changes. He STTN.

  • My son who is FF would eat a little bit every hour if you let him.  He was doing that at first.  I didn't know - just thought if he was hungry to feed him.  My pedi told me to increase the time to 2 hours because I mentioned how fussy he got at night.  He told me it was because his stomach was always digesting food and that was making him fussy.  We have now gone to 3 hours between feedings.  He sometimes want to eat a little earlier and we'll fix it (15-20 mins).  Sometimes he goes a little over.  He has hit the 4 mos. wakeful so sleep has been effected.  Before that he was STTN.

  • I still feed DS on demand and plan to until at least a year. He usually wants to eat 20-30 minutes after he gets up from a nap. He is still taking 4 or 5 naps a day (catnapper). He also usually eats once at night, sometimes twice.

I've also started giving him oatmeal around 5:30 at night. He usually nurses once again before bed which is usually around 8:30.

  • My son (EBF) sleeps through the night (maybe 9 p.m. till 6 a.m., then up to eat and back down for two more hours). I was feeding him every 2 hours during the day or even more often because I thought I had to cram 8 feedings into his waking hours. My lactation consultant just told me there's no need to feed him more than every 3 to 4 hours at his age (13 weeks) if he's not demanding it (I was feeding him basically before he was really telling me he was hungry). So now I'm letting him go 3+ hours, and it isn't affecting his night sleep, and I am not as tied to him during the day! I guess he was just snacking before and now he's eating more at each feeding. It's not a schedule--I let him tell me when he is hungry, so I guess I'm still feeding on demand--but I also make sure that he really IS hungry (and not just, say, bored and a little cranky) before I just pop him on.
