PP bleeding post-c/s

With DD I had heavy bleeding for a couple of days, period-like bleeding for about 2 weeks, and then spotted for another 4, so a total of 6 weeks of bleeding. This time, I'm a week out and it seems to be done. Is it normal for it to be over this quickly? I know there's typically less bleeding after a c/s than a vaginal birth, but to me one week just seems really fast (not that I'm complaining!!).

How long did you bleed post-c/s?

BFP1: DD1 born April 2011 at 34w1d via unplanned c/s due to HELLP, DVT 1 week PP

BFP3: DD2 born Feb 2013 at 38w4d via unplanned RCS due to uterine dehiscence

Re: PP bleeding post-c/s

  • I bleed maybe 7 to 10 days. They really clean out your uterus during a csection so there is less lining to shed than with a vaginal delivery.

I guess it's just strange to me since DD1 was also a c/s but I bled for so much longer.

I missed that part.  Did you have a different doctor??

Yes. Her whichever OB is on duty at the hospital is the one in charge of your birth and, in the case of a c/s, does the surgery. So 2 different doctors. DD1 was a preemie, but I can't really see how that would make a difference, either. Who knows, though. My MW checked me today and said everything was just fine, so I'm just going to count myself lucky this time around! :-)

Different doctors might do a better or worse job of cleaning out the uterus.

  • I bleed for 6 weeks and a lot! I hope that doesn't happen again
  • I stopped for a few days and then it started up again.  I BF and find I bleed more when he eats really well.  I will say that the bleeding isn't near as bad as with my vaginal births but it is still there.

  • Maybe 2 weeks after my c-section. After my VBAC it was more like 5 weeks.

  • It was not long. Don't be surprised if it starts up again.  I had light bleeding off and on for 6 weeks, but it would stop for a few days and then start again.
