Dads & Dads-to-be

Newbie intros

I noticed we had a great deal of new dads sign up in the past week or two...

Why not introduce yourselves a little more, let us more about you?

Location?  (Doesn't have to be specific... leave it to just the state if you want)

Age?

Hobbies?

Favorite sports teams?

Gender hopes?  (Yes, we all want healthy and happy... if you could go to McBaby's and order like you could a sandwich... boy or girl? and we aren't saying you will be disappointed if you get the other gender either)

Fears of being a new dad?

Any newbie fears that are shared here will be rewarded with my own self admissions on fears when I was an expectant father myself!!

  • My name is Kevin and I am 30 years old (31 in less than a week).  My wife of 3 1/2 years is pregnant with our first child and she is an active poster on the September 2013 Mom's board.  I think her name is Eyris on there...I don't know, I'm not a lurker.  We live in the Metro Detroit area of Michigan.  I work for a Telecommunications firm as the supervisor for a helpdesk.  Basically the plastics company we work for has over 3,000 cell phones and 20 buildings with phone systems installed.  I oversee all of this and deal with every one of their stupid problems.  It's not that I hate my job...I just don't like it very much.   I've played drums since 5th grade and up until the last 5 or so years I had been in a few bands of varying musical styles.  Mostly rock/metal, although I was in a cover band that played a lot of classic rock and new wave from the 80's.  I'm a  fan of the Detroit area sports teams, especially the Red Wings and Tigers.  The Lions have been terrible my entire life and I find it easier to not care about them so as to avoid un-needed stress. As for the gender of our first child, if I had to choose I would like a girl. I don't really have a reason for that....maybe because I find it easier to name a girl.  I could name 5 girl names that I like to 1 boy name. And the fears?  Probably normal one's like any other first-time Dad.  Will I be able to provide for the child?  Will I be a good parent?  Will I ever have sex again? Will my child poop on me?  Those are the things drifting through my thoughts when I'm trying to get to sleep at night.Anyways, I like that there's a forum like this to share experiences and ask questions to other Dad's.  Any advice on this whole "being a Dad" thing is greatly appreciated.

  • "Will my child poop on me?"

Your child will not only poop on you, but will also pee and vomit on you as well as spitting directly in your face and rubbing boggers on you as well.

    Enjoy!!!

I notice you did not list a fear about the actual labor and delivery.  Might want to visualize that scene prior to it happeningIck!

One of my first fears was that the baby was deformed or something in utero. When we had the first big ultrasound, where they look at measurements and the condition of the fetus (week 22-25 I believe), the first thing my wife wanted confirmed was that our boy had all his fingers and toes.  Apparently, that is a fairly common question for some reason.

But the fears are more intense once the baby is born....and you realize this is a new life that is 100% dependent on you.  That is overwhelming at times during the sleep deprevation period you will ALL go through those first few weeks.

    I fear the poop...

Besides that though, I have always had a fear of holding children.  Even thinking about it makes me anxious because I don't want to drop a baby.  I'm sure that I will get over it pretty quickly once we have our child.

Back in Jr. High School Health Class/Sex Ed,  they showed us a video of a live birth.  Looked a little messy.  It would be slightly embarrassing to pass out in the delivery room.

A friend of ours was playing with his son and holding him up in the air when the kid projectile vomited on his face.  Yay kids.

  • My son is drooling like a crackhead right now.  Partly due to toothing, partly due to him being a freak at times!

I am sad at times that he is growing up so fast.  As much as I look forward to really rough-housing with him, When he burrows in on me and he look at me like I am the most important thing in the world to him, it just makes my heart melt.

Maybe I'm lucky then, as I managed to avoid vomit, unless you count little bits of spit-up as "vomit". Considering it smells like sweet cottage cheese and has less volume than a shot of liquor, I'm not willing to call it that.

As for pooping *on* me... I've only had him poop on my hands when I was changing a diaper. Never like spraying all over the place like movies sometimes have. Did have him poop once in the bath when he had diarrhea though. It's ok, that bathtub needed a good scrubbing anyways.

I love tossing my son in the air and flipping him upside down. He's old enough now he actually enjoys it. Just important to remember how recently he ate!

We were babysitting our neice and she had just finished eating when my wife sat down with her.  Five minutes later an entire meal was projectile vomitted onto my wife.  I was so stunned by it, it took me almost a full minute to get up and help her! I also laughed my ass off, which to this day is held over me like an ax.  Straight out of a movie!

  • Greetings everyone, my name is Paul.

I'm 39 and work in I.T. at the University of Alabama. My wife is 33 and we are expecting our first child in July.

We have had the anatomy scan already, so we know we are having a boy. We have already picked out his name "Mason Edward".

Hobbies - I enjoy gaming tremendously, and movies (both at home and theater).

    Favorite team - Pittsburgh Steelers.

Biggest fears are will I pass out in the delivery room? Will I be a good dad? Will I be able to change a messy diaper and keep my lunch down? Ick!

Diapers are nothing!  Being a Steelers fan is probably much harderCrying  I thought I would have got squirmy during delivery, but by the time she starts pushing you will be ready to work down there, no problem.

Packer fan here....from conception!!!! We got one on you a few years back, but it was a pretty good game.  Probably not a big Nick Collins fan????

  • Not so much a fan of Nick Collins, but it is what it is...

Thanks for the heads up on delivery! Seems like there are so many books out there on so many topics, have you found that natural instinct kicks in?

    Primal, dude......Primal.

And, for the record, I think Mike Tomlin is one hell of a head coach. No doubt his teams will always go to war for him.

I was actually very happy to see 'Bama beat The Irish.  I am the anti-Irish, meaning an Irish man who hates Notre Dame athletics.

  • Hey all, first post.  My first child (a little girl) was born Saturday.  Wife's been on the site quasi-religiously during the pregnancy, I just started poking around today.

I'm 28, live in Arizona, and am a college professor of film.  I'm a fan of the Chicago Cubs and a huge comic fan.  Biggest fear is more just failing the wife than the baby, lol.

Cubs...no good.  I am a Brewers season ticket holder....well, we were until Jake was born end of last summer!!  Love your state.  Was out there a few years back and went skiing on a Tuesday and golfing on a Wednesday.  My father is a professor of poli sci at Cal State Monterey Bay out in CA.

Welcome and congrats on the little one!

  • Thanks for the welcome, cigars are coming.  I teach Women and Film, but I made short films for a good five years on my own.  Just stuff with friends, etc.  Now I'm working on a textbook, but that's been put on the back burner since baby came.

PS3 for me.  Was playing Black Ops 2 for a few months but have predictably gotten bored of it.  The next few months are going to be amazing for games.  Crysis 3 on my birthday, God of War: Ascension, Bioshock: Infinite, Metal Gear Revengeance, Last of Us, and GTA 5.

  • GTA V was pushed to September.

PS3 is awesome hardware-wise and it has a couple exclusives that I wish I could play, but I can't stand the controller.  I hate the way the triggers feel.  The motion to pull them back just doesn't feel natural to me.  Since most of what I play is shooters I have stayed away.

Yeah, I sausage finger the PS3 controllers. I have both systems, but prefer the 360 hands down (pun there)

Yeah, I just heard that.  Along with Last of Us which got pushed back to June.  As long as it means a better game without bugs then I'm fine with delays.  Assasin's Creed 3 was a disaster of a game.  Too many bugs and glitches that ruined the gameplay for me.

I tried playing the 360 at my friends house and the controller just felt so foreign to me.  I guess you like what you're used to.  I've purchased all three Playstation's but I am curious about the Ouya system.  I like the idea of trying out a game before buying it.

  • Posted for the first time last week (asked about budgeting -- thanks for all of the responses).

I'm Beau. 35. My wife Rebecca and I are expecting our first, a boy, in late May. We're in the DC area; both of us work in higher ed -- I'm in communications, she's in fundraising.

Browns (despite being from Pittsburgh originally) and Redskins, O's and Bucs, Caps and Pens, Manchester City if anyone else watches Premier League... and Ohio University, my alma mater -- you know us from last year's Sweet 16 and this year's football win at Happy Valley, but you probably still think we're Ohio State.

As for hobbies... I do some work in Democratic politics on the side.

I have a sister who's almost 10 years younger than me and we've got two young nephews and a niece now so I'm not panicked about holding a baby, changing diapers, dealing with projectile vomit, etc. (last time my 9-month-old nephew was at our place he and one of our dogs both covered our living room rug with barf within minutes of each other). I *am* a little freaked about expenses in a very high cost-of-living area. Biggest fear though is wondering how to raise a kid balancing everything you want to see in him -- be a guy's guy, but be empathetic and compassionate... don't be too shy to ask a girl to dance but don't be an arrogant jerk... be open to believing in something bigger than yourself, but have a healthy skepticism... that kind of stuff.

Another Browns fan! Alright!  Born and raised in Ohio so I know the difference between OU and OSU.  One of my college regrets is that I never made it to OU for Halloween.

I think, as father's, we all fear this.  We have an image as to what we want our son's to be, and I struggle all the time with the concept that he will have a life to live that is not necessarily the vision that I have for him.

It will be tough, but I think we will learn as we go, just as our son's will.  A daughter is meant to be protected and spoiled (maybe a strong word). But with a son, we have a whole different responsibility to them.

And the fears?  Probably normal one's like any other first-time Dad.  Will I be able to provide for the child?  Will I be a good parent?  Will I ever have sex again? Will my child poop on me?  Those are the things drifting through my thoughts when I'm trying to get to sleep at night.

The main things you really need to provide for your child is love, a roof over his head, clothes, and a belly full of food, and your wife can provide that for a while.

You will have sex again... it will be a little while, and it won't be nearly as frequent for a while.

And yes, your child will poop, pee, and vomit on you at some point in time.  I've been vomited on in the waiting area of a restaurant just a few months back.  Poop on me has been more of a little on my finger during a change, not like the movies with projectile poop.

Hi Paul.  Can't help you on the delivery room as my wife was a c-section from the get go and there was a very large screen blocking anything.  As far as diaper changes and lunches down... when he switches to actual foods there may be a few that might prove to be a challenge.  The first couple of days are a task with the meconium (sp), it is very sticky and weird.  After that, it starts to convert to "normal" and from my recollection, wasn't too bad minus the volume at times that managed to escape the diaper during breastfeeding only.
