Cloth Diapering

Baby Sprinkle Bummer

I don't want to sound whiny about this, but...

With #2 soon to be here, my mom and sister had a small sprinkle for our growing family. We have DS who is 18 months old now and I have all his baby clothes packed into boxes. Most of the clothes are gender neutral as I really liked all this green frog stuff when we were expecting him and we were given plenty of baby clothes, really. I was mainly concerned about getting a few pairs of pink/purple pants and jackets since we are having a girl this time! Just accessories kind of thing. And of course, cloth diapers! (Can you see there is a reason this is over here and not on the Baby Shower board?)

So I created a small registry on MyRegistry.com. I know all the people that came are on the internet often enough - checking emails, doing business, Facebooking, etc. So I figured it would be super easy for them to check out our short registry which had girly colored cloth diapers on it, a diaper sprayer (how have I survived without one this long is beyond me!), and a few other odds and ends.

We didn't get any cloth diaper stuff. None. But we did get loads more onesies! Except they are all pink and girly. Yay. As if having 15 onesies in 0-3 months wasn't enough already, just add another 10!

I don't want to seem ungrateful, but really, it kind of sucks that we didn't get things that we could actually use. And now *I* have to buy things like a diaper sprayer, larger wet bag, and AIOs for a girl. Great. Why did I even bother making a registry???

  • Honestly, when people buy gifts they want to buy something "fun" and easy, like cute baby clothes. I usually buy gifts as i am heading to the event, literally on the drive to the location. I can stop at any Target, Ross, Marshalls or whatever and buy cute onesies. Buying cloth diapers isn't fun. People tend to either love it or think that it is completely weird and gross. Plus it isn't easy either. I can't just stop by any place and buy cloth diapers.

FYI: It's probably a good thing you posted here instead of Baby Showers because you'd probably get a major side-eye regarding expecting others to buy your child's items, instead of buying them yourself, especially for a 2nd child.

  • You seem very ungrateful. People can buy whatever they want with their money. It is nice to get useful gifts but its your responsibility to provide for your child, not theirs.

  • hahaha. I know there was a reason I put this over here!

Sooo all I was really trying to say was this: "Why can't more people understand how addictive cloth diapering is!?!"

We have already spent about $200 on a newborn cloth diaper package alone, which is a lot. I just have trouble justifying spending more, especially when we will be buying a new car seat and other big ticket items on our own.

It really was sweet for everyone to get us a bunch of girly clothes and some of the stuff is super cute, I just wish I could have seen one piece of fluff in all that stuff! Stick out tongue

  • $200 on newborn cloth diapers?  That's insane.  I haven't even spent that much and have been cloth diapering my son for 1 year, plus have tons extra for baby #2.  And diaper sprayers cost about $10 to make yourself.

  • Can't you reuse the NB diapers? I'm guessing your 18 month old isn't wearing them anymore. They would be covered by one of the girly onesies you got so many of. I don't CD so, no I don't understand the addiction.

ok, totally agree with everything else on here, but I have to cut her a break on how much she's spent on diapers. If you aren't doing prefolds or alvas, this actually doesn't seem that bad. Lots of people spend more than 200 on their stash (myself included - although I applaud you for keeping it simple). Plus nb dipes apparently have really good resale value.

  • Why do you need girly diapers? They are diapers... We registered for cloth diapering supplies, didn't get any, and simply purchased them ourselves. It wasn't such a big deal, and we didn't get any girly covers, just gender neutral ones.

  • You don't HAVE to buy "AIOs for a girl." Your baby won't care if she isn't in pink and purple.

Instead of complaining on the Internet, you could take onesies with tags back to the store, and get store credit for other things you need. Problem solved.

  • From the OP's post in a thread on the Baby Shower Board:

    imageBriDaily:

Here is what I would do, just because I am a crunchy mom - Buy a SUPER cute cloth diaper and include SUPER cute cloth wipes (really easy to make with some cotton flannel, if you have a sewing machine) and maybe a small wet bag. I would also include some information on the benefits of cloth diapering - the book "Changing Diapers" by Kelly Wels is a good thing to include and not terribly expensive on Amazon.

If you know the person really well, you may feel it is better to just get that book and a small wet bag (always handy to put poopy clothes in from all those blow-outs you get when using disposable diapers!).

I love not bending to the desires of people who have the audacity to have Diapers and Wipes parties and offering an eco-friendly option instead Stick out tongue

Maybe your friends and family didn't get you exactly what you wanted because of this kind of behavior.  This was posted in a thread about a (presumably disposable) Diapers and Wipes shower.

You advocate getting something for someone that they have no desire or use for.

Then you complain when you don't get exactly what you requested.

  • Well aren't you just all types of speshul. Want to know who's responsible for covering your daughter's behind? You are. Yes, you, even though you have had to purchase the car seat, etc.

Would you like to know why it is your responsibility? Because you are the parent. And guess what? Kids get older and more expensive and no one throws you sprinkles or showers every year to provide clothes and necessities for your child, you have to do that all by yourself. Time to grow up.

Then again, you already have a son, shouldn't you know it's by now?

  • Wow, OP. Everyone is being way too harsh on you.

I cloth diaper. I understand the addiction. In fact, my family buys me all of the cloth diapers that I get, I think *I've* only had to buy like one!

A lot of people get confused by those online registries, so I just send out a monthly newsletter with the styles that I most want to try and let them all figure it out amongst themselves who owes me what.

Lord, there's no way I would have procreated if I was the one who had to supply all that, and I couldn't rely on family and friends to keep costs down a little!

But nb dipes are so iffy. You don't really know how big they will be or what would fit, and they might not be able to wear them long.

I agree, MK - that's why we did a rental :) But if you're one of those people who insists on buying a nb stash and you don't want prefolds - even alva nb dipes at $6 ea would run you $150 for 24 diapers. And that's before wipes, wet bags, etc. I'm just saying it would be easy to spend $200 for a nb stash.

  • By the way, does anyone else hate the word sprinkle?

My sis is having a "sprinkle" for her new baby. Of course, there are 6 years between 1 & 2, and she's re-married, so it's her DH's first baby.

But if I had gotten an invite for a "sprinkle" 18 months after attending the first baby's shower, I would have ripped it up and thrown it away. Stop trying to make it cute - you're throwing a party and expecting me to bring a gift, calling it a sprinkle instead of a shower doesn't make me want to go any more.

  • Can you OMGbuy your own CDs?

Why can't you use your DS's CDs on your DD? Did you not buy any gender neutral CDs? If not, that is your own fault. No one sees the diapers so why not just have them share? I can't imagine not using DS's CDs on a little girl in the future.

And if you are already CD why don't you have a sprayer? Is that really worth registering for? I think mine was $10. And I barely use it. The horror.

Get a grip. Your kids are 18 months apart. There is no need for you to have registered for anything. Ridiculous.

  • Dear lord, I read the OP last night on my phone and knew it wasn't worth coming downstairs to post. But I'm glad to see this blew up nicely.

  • Um, okay. You sound like an entitled brat, plain and simple. I'm not against sprinkles even, but damnit woman, your kids aren't even 2 yrs apart, and you need big ticket items? Further, if you can't provide those basics for your own spawn, take measures to ensure that you don't have anymore til you can. As for cloth diapers, why can't you use the ones you already have? I mean, they're just poop and pee catchers, does it matter what they look like?

As to your post on the showers board. You'd spitefully buy someone else cloth when they prefer disposable just make a point, knowing it'd go to waste, yet you'repissed about having to go buy your own? Okay.

You're right this is a great thread.

The only reason for needing a new carseat for a baby is the reason I will need to buy a new infant carseat when/if we have number 2.

I borrowed my sister's infant carseat (omg it was blue and I had a girl!) and when/if we have our second we will need to get a new one since it will expire before that point.

However, when/if we do have a second child I fully intend on paying for the carseat, newborn diapers (since I didn't diaper from birth last time), new crib if we need one or toddler bed for my current daughter, double stroller if I feel I need one, and a new carrier (the one we had sucked and I'd really like to get an Ergo).

I don't intend on making a registry (unless I want to get a discount coupon) or having a "Sprinkle".
