Fraz, our lab, and DS and I went to Middle Patuxent River today. The level was normal, but it clearly flooded recentlythere was a lot of mud and silt on top of the leaves. I threw a stick into the river for Frazier, who was off leash. He ran toward the river, starting to cross some sand at the edge. He hit the sand and just vanished.
It must have been deposited in the flood and it was deep and loosely packed. If he wasn't as big and strong, I wouldn't have seen his thrashing and it's unlikely I would have found him in time. I managed to grab his tail and drag him backwards onto the mud while laying on my stomach. He is fine, but had sand in poor ears. We nearly lost our big doofy dog... Who tried to run right across the sand again after I dragged him out. Dumb ass.
I was fine and joking and sh!t till we got home. Now I'm shaking and sobbing. Holy fluck. I'm so glad he is okay. I'm so glad he went into the sand, not DS or I. I just threw up. That would have been a horrific death.
Re: Holy fluck. My dog nearly died.
When my big rottie was a puppy I took him to the creek near our house. I assumed that all dogs came programmed to swim so I tossed him in. He sunk and I had to scoop him out.
To this day, he still really can't swim.
Holy hell that sounds terrifying!
I'm glad you are all ok!
Dog flipping disappeared like a rock thrown into the water. I've never seen anything like it.
