Potty training Question

How effective were the Pull Ups? I'm experimenting today but it just seems to be making DD more irritable. Should I keep with it or just go right to regular panties?

Re: Potty training Question

  • We went straight to regular panties.  To me pull-ups are just diapers called by a different name.  We use them or a diaper for naptime/bedtime but I don't expect her to be sleep potty trained for a while.  They are just used to keep her dry.

They don't allow your child to feel wet, to experience having pee go down her legs and make her cold and uncomfortable.  I think a big part of potty training is not wanting to be uncomfortable in wet, cold pants.

    Good luck

  • Everybody is different. I tried pull-ups a while ago and dd just treated them like a diaper.  And after a few days I got tired of changing them as often as a diaper.  Then I tried cold turkey to underwear and that was a big fail, went through more underwear and pants then I care to remember.  However, on Saturday my dd was all set to start going on the potty - her plan. And she had asked for tigger underwear (the huggies slip ons) and then we moved to princess underwear (pull-ups) and has been happy as a clam and keeping them dry.

I have explained to her that we want to keep the princesses dry but if they catch poop its ok (we battle constipation issues a lot and I don't want to have trouble going).  Since Saturday she hasn't peed once in a pull-up, I'm sure there are drips but that's all part of the learning curve.

    Good Luck.

  • We tried pull ups and felt they were a flop.  We went straight to panties and wore pullups at night for a couple months.  DD started asking about not wearing pullups to bed so now she's a panty only kid.

  • We tried pull up's but like others have said they are just glorified diapers. If you want to practice just having something easy to pull up and down and try the potty they work, but actually getting any success out of them in the form of potty training we ditched them and then had luck.

  • How old is she? I don't think a child necessarily has to feel wet to learn to use the potty. Both my girls started telling me when they had to go just because they could feel the urge. Pull ups were just easier than taking off and putting on a diaper, and they contained the mess as DD was learning to hold it long enough to make it to the potty. They don't work for some kids; they do for others.

  • I certainly get the appeal of pull ups to learn the process of potty training. If you want potty training to be a long process, you can use pull ups and ditch them when she is 100% trained. As others mentioned they aren't going to be motivating for a child to train and aren't going to be the best method if you want to get training over with in a few days.

If you go cold turkey with underwear, your child is likely going to train a lot quicker though it will be messier. If you try that method and after 4-5 days your child is still having frequent accidents, it likely means she isn't ready yet and you should go back to diapers and give it a few more months.

She just turned 2 the day after christmas...she's not verbalizing it yet but I thought I'd try something different with her

I understand this in theory. For us, DD2 knew when she had to go potty, she just didn't have the bladder control to make it to the toilet every time. I didn't want to discourage her from using the potty if she wanted to go, but if she had been in undies, she would have continued to have accidents. Maybe that meant she wasn't completely ready, but when she was telling me "poopy mommy, potty", I wasn't going to ignore that either. She was actually poop trained long before she was pee trained.

Is she showing any other signs of readiness? Is she interested in using the potty?

  • My DD is almost exactly the same age and I have an 8 month old. My advice, fwiw, is wait until she is ready. PTing was not even on our radar, but we went to the store and she really wanted the froggy potty, in the past when I stuck her on the toliet nothing happened, but I figured it couldn't hurt to get it, and I grabbed some pullups. We came home and she used it immediately and peed in it 5x that day and only had a wet pullup once. Ok, looks like we are doing this, even if I wasn't ready.

Fast forward a few weeks, and it is a PIA. She has never pooped in the potty, which is fine, and we have just gotten over our fear of public restrooms. Problem is that she could care less if she is wet. We have tried pantless, and regular underwear and it just makes a mess, so she is in pullups. She pees in her pullup probably 3x a day, sometimes only at nap, but that is rare. The problem is with a baby, it is a huge pain. Not sure if you take them both out by yourself a lot, but it is horrible being in a nasty Target bathroom wearing your baby and trying to hold your LO on a toliet. I may be causing problems down the road, but I am not pushing anything until my DS is walking so that I can at least set him down and  help her - I guess I could bring a stroller everywhere, but I don't. I've heard that you can either potty train for a year at 2 or in 3 days at 3. Of course there are lots of exceptions, but I tell you my tale of woe, because PTing is not something I would push or do on a lark.

  • New went straight to underwear and pull-ups for bed time.  The first time he felt the pee on his underwear it clicked that he didn't like to be wet.

When we do use a pull up he will just pee even though he is potty trained -

She comes in with me when I go and I'll ask and she'll say yes but sometimes goes and sometimes not. I'm not into pushing this issue as we do have a new addition in the house but I was just wondering what would be better. She seems to like the regular underwear better and getting annoyed/upset when she pees....
